You are correct that the plan is for all trains that pass through Richmond to stop at both RMS and Staples Mill (except auto train), meaning that with a new bridge over the James, then Main Street would have hourly service to DC and points north. This would only improve with the reconstruction of the abandoned S line to Raleigh (which is included in the infrastructure bills in congress and create a 110 mph rail line).

  8. Like Icetera said, we currently have 3 round trips that stop at Richmond Main Street. With the $3 billion infrastructure deal that the state passed, all new regionals that terminate in Richmond will be extended to MSS which would bring the total to around 10 round trips. Currently, none of the long distance, Norfolk regional or southeast HSR trains stop there and there currently is no way that can happen until a new bridge is built for passenger rail across the james river. The price tag for that new bridge is estimated at about $1 billion according to the DC2RVA plan and I don’t believe it’s included in either the state plan or the Amtrak 2035 plan. However, it seems like returning as much rail service to downtown as possible is a state priority so hopefully it won’t be long till the S line is restored and a second bridge is built over the James. Amtrak did run a test train to the western side of MSS a few weeks ago during the night so hopefully they may consider restoring service to the western side of the station.
  9. Richmond will have hourly train service to Washington DC by 2030. Getting the travel time down to 2 hours will be breeze if we can build dedicated track for passenger trains, which just so happens to be in the long term plan for the rail line.

  11. I think y’all are exaggerating how important having a tall skyline is too a city. Yes, tall buildings are cool to look at and help the city in a proverbial pissing contest with cities like Raleigh and Charlotte, but buildings like the Monroe building do less for downtown street level activity than a 4 story hotel. When you have a parking garage take up the first 3 floors of the building, how many people are gonna walk to that building? I know I wouldn’t. The people who work in this building likely are suburbanites that provide little to no contribution to the downtown area other than using office space there. While I’m opposed to completely losing the SCB and the older part of the Pocahontas building, those buildings actually provide something to the area. The Monroe building has no street prescience and looks like something straight out of a suburban Houston office park. That lot is underutilized and could be redeveloped to actually contribute to the streetscape and provide foot traffic and businesses for the area. And honestly, I disagree wholeheartedly that you need a ton of 30+ story buildings to be a successful city. There are plenty of examples in Europe as well as multiple in the US of cities that have very few, if more than one building above 30 stories that are very successful cities. In Europe, most cities don’t have any buildings over 400 feet. Look at Amsterdam, I’d take a dense, walkable downtown like Amsterdam that is comprised of buildings no taller than 10 stories over a downtown core that has a few 50 story towers any day of the week, as height isn’t the only thing that matters in the success of a downtown and the overall perception of a city by outsiders. What matters is walkability and a buildings ability to add to the urban environment, and I’d argue that the Monroe tower and buildings like it detract from downtowns urban feel. While it’s not bad to have 30+ story buildings downtown, we should prioritize a buildings ability to engage the street and provide pedestrian activity throughout the day, as that encourages more businesses to open downtown than a suburban style office tower ever will, no matter how tall it is.
  12. Hopefully this isn’t final. I don’t care very much about the Monroe building but the old part of the Pocahontas building and the Supreme Court building shouldn’t be demolished. Don’t know why the state doesn’t just sell off the old Pocahontas building and Supreme Court building as I’m sure developers would love to revitalize them as the views of the capitol could be a big selling point. The state should be focused on developing their acres of undeveloped land to the east of the capitol instead of tearing down buildings that are historic and productive to the urban core.

  15. This isn’t just a Richmond area trend. Since streetcar lines were torn up in the mid 20th century and the federal government subsidized car centric development, almost all transportation funding has gone to highways in pretty much every municipality across the country with a few exceptions. While we can create a very dense neighborhood even with 6 and 12 story buildings (something similar to European cities), it is disappointing that we can’t get 12 stories along our busiest transportation corridor due to NIMBYs who would only get positive effects from the rezoning. I think that if the city implements good urban design such as streets that don’t only emphasize cars in this area, while implementing bike and transit infrastructure and minimizing setbacks and packing in units, we could see this area support something like light rail with ease. In terms of the overall region though, doing things like eliminating parking requirements altogether and redeveloping parking lots in suburban areas could do a lot to increase the viability of transit along major corridors such as broad, route 1, midlo turnpike and Hull street. Luckily suburban counties are starting to see that only investing in highways doesn’t work(ie. NOVA) and have become interested in transit oriented development. Hopefully this trend fully catches on and we can decrease the inequity in transportation spending.
  16. Looks like soil sampling. Pretty sure they wouldn’t be doing it unless they were planning to build something that would require lots of excavation. Good sign for things to come at this site!
  17. If demand is there, I have no doubt that another airline snaps up those routes, especially having zero competition with JetBlue out. This is just a temporary setback that could allow another airline to enter the RIC to west coast market.

Love this move by Chesterfield in encouraging apartments and townhomes on underused parking lots in shopping centers. Helps not just the urban design of the centers but also increases tax revenue for the county. Glad to see Chesterfield beginning to embrace more urban style development concepts. Hopefully we start seeing more and more shopping centers in the Richmond area that are underutilized be redeveloped into dense, mixed use centers.
  19. I don’t think this had been posted yet but here is Chesterfields vision for the courthouse road and hill street intersection. Love the density, hopefully it actually gets built like this and we see other nodes pop up like this throughout the metro area. Plans like this at major intersections that add density could be good in encouraging chesterfield, henrico and Hanover to adopt BRT or Light rail in order to help manage their population growth.
  20. Great news that this is being finalized. Hopefully Virginia has even more ambitious passenger rail plans in place so if the Biden administration opens up the billions being proposed for passenger rail expansion, Virginia can capitalize and expand service even more, such as building the s-line to Raleigh or implementing east-west service. For now, I definitely look forward to using the new services.

  24. Great find! Seems like something that would be built in Manhattan or Brooklyn. Very urban. Love it! I don’t know how financial feasible a tower like this would be in Richmond due to lower land costs but it looks great and I’d love to see towers like this pop up all over Monroe ward and the cbd.
  25. The land that chesterfield purchased will never be anything industrial. As someone who grew up in he area close to this land, if something like a large manufacturing facility was proposed there, the amount of nimbyism would make the NIMBYs in the city look like weak. The powhite extension is a complete waste of money, as induced demand will only spur more single family residential development and add further gridlock to roads like Hull street and Midlothian turnpike and will make traffic on the powhite worse than it already is. Would have loved to see this money go towards building a light rail line down Midlothian turnpike to the village, where they just passed a plan to allow for higher densities and the creation of a street grid, but chesterfield is still the most backward thinking major county in the Richmond area.
