    Suburban Projects

You're right, the makeup of this development has dramatically changed since its inception. Also, the mlive comments are actually pretty spot on in regards to the announcement.

    Wealthy Street Mega Thread

I think someone mentioned before about apartments, but I'd have to think that 2nd level apartments on Wealthy would go like gangbusters or is the financials just not worth it?

    Van Andel Arena Expansion?

Where every pro league should expand ... and where they will Its a fun article from ESPN since MLB commish stated they'd look at expansion. FWIW, GR is not mentioned as an option for any sport.

    Van Andel Arena Expansion?

Its not that the Mud Hens would ever move, but that the Tiger organization could choose not to renew their operational contract with them and can choose a different team to be their AAA affiliate.

    Van Andel Arena Expansion?

MLS is already planning on moving out of one of their smaller markets (Columbus) and moving to Austin. As much as I love the idea of a major sports team here, I do not ever see it happening. Detroit and their 4M estimated metro population with 3 billionaire owners, will get that MLS team. No doubt about it/I'd bet a 6 pack of some Founders Mosaic promise on it. GR could host a AAA baseball team, but I've not ever really heard lots of rumors on that end.

Grand Rapids Airport (GRR) News and Developments

WMU has actually been the "host" when GR has put in the bid in the past. From what I recall, lack of direct flights in and out of GR and the size of Van Andel were the lead reasons the city was not chosen for a first round NCAA host. I feel the city should try to bid again (2012) feels like a long time ago.

What are Grand Rapids' best assets?

GR vs Denver is tough. I feel GR competes well against equally sized cities. For people in my office that come from "interior" states that have relocated to W MI people are blown away by the quantity of available water options. Lake MI, inland lakes, rivers, up north (I feel that TC can be a selling point for GR as well. Schools are also pretty good in most of the metro.

Interesting that its with a regional carrier. Generally there is a scope clause regarding distance and/or passenger limit a regional can take versus actually having a union pilot. I'd guess going this route saved them money using the smaller plane.

If GR adds direct flights to Cancun, that is only going to continue to strip traffic away from Lansing.

Wasn't it hot/humid? There's no shade where that is held.

ArtPrize and Project 1 - Grand Rapids

ArtPrize artist registration up from last year It was up for this year (perhaps because it was a 10 year anniversary?). I like the idea if it helps bring more artists and more high quality work. In the off years, I think if you have clustered art like Site: Lab, that could be equally interesting.

Hinman project - new 13 story hotel at 10 Ionia

We already have a Courtyard and a JW downtown. The AC brand is coming next year. I would guess its going to be a regular Marriott or Sheraton hotel. If it goes off brand, maybe a Moxy?

Hinman project - new 13 story hotel at 10 Ionia

I agree I'm bummed, but at the end of the day this replaces a surface lot and there are getting to be fewer and fewer in downtown.

    West Michigan/Grand Rapids Economy

I know its totally anecdotal, but I have neighbors native of FL and AZ who prefer the MI winter over the oppressive heats of their states summer. But I am sure more have moved away due to the winters then have come here and been okay with it. I agree. To everyone outside of MI, we are Detroit. I was taking an uber in CA and I mentioned Grand Rapids (I was asked, that's Detroit right?) Detroit's rise will be rising waters for all of Michigan. However, I am probably one of the few cantankerous ones that feel Michigan is already too populous and want to keep the state to myself.
