  2. IMO the one across from the post office looks better. The palmetto trees help, and there's just something very municipal-appearing about that parking garage.
  3. Surely he plans to turn the parking garage into more of an aesthetically pleasing part of the property. That thing has always been real hard on the eyes.

  5. All in the world it would take is peripheral construction and added interior pillars in the parking garages to hold the weight, if that's even needed. Surely they drove pilings way down to support all of the parking garages as they currently exist. Is there anything in particular about the way parking garages are built to support however many floors they have that is inferior to how 25-story buildings are built? If so, I guess people are parking in dangerous structures in which the bottom level could give way to the weight above it at any moment.

  7. I have visions of the developer dressing up the facades of most of the garages and implementing both peripheral and central reinforcement techniques to support the apartments.

I think shuttles, attractively marked crossings at intersections, and enticing landscaping along sidewalks will all come together to tie things together from Columbia Common to the river and from the North Main area to Rosewood Drive basically. But speaking of buses (no commuter trains here - yet), every Sunday morning, including this morning on the way out to breakfast and back, several buses crossed our path in several areas of downtown.   11. That's the back of it. The monument is supposed to recall the old World Trade Towers. I think the scale is nice, and I appreciate that a dog is part of it. And the bent metal beams are actually part of the old towers.

    The sooner that parcel on the northwest corner gets developed the better, because within the last few days, new signage in big white stand-alone letters on the side of the old armory building above COLA'S says HUSSEY GAY BELL. The lettering doesn't go well on the historic brick, and the combination of names is only a little better than if Bell had an 'e' on the end and Gay were the first name in the logo, as in GAY HUSSEY BELLE. Imagine the words HUSSEY GAY BELL in all capitals in white along the top of the taller building in this photograph. That's what we've got now. It might make the ph

    Papadea is the family name most closely associated with it. Pinnicle Inc. is the generic company name. Some of the property has buildings on it. The other, as we know, is leased parking.

  17. I emailed some thoughts to the director of planning with the City and she sent me an updated rendering with the following note. (There are) some conditions on the approval. Here is a revised image they submitted at the meeting, which gives a bit better understanding of how lighting will brighten the corner. Also, the darker material is aluminum so, while dark, it will have a reflective quality to it.

  19. The COMET can say it is the largest, most extensive public transit system going in the state now, and the best is yet to come. Let's chill for now.
  20. There's too much momentum going on all over the greater downtown area including the Vista, central business district, Five Points, all of it... That's what cities are doing now: developing.
  21. I don't like the comparison to BMW and Boeing. If we compare them, then we have to say Charleston has on the drawing board another Boeing in its master plan to develop the north end of the peninsula in the city limits with lots of homes, retail, office space, etc.

    The problem with the intersections is that some of them have four-way stop signs and some only two-way. It's confusing. They need to be consistent.

    The apartments being built at Huger and Blossom, at Pulaski and Greene, at Pulaski and Pendleton, and beside the Blossom Street railroad drive-over bridge aren't going to be blond brick.
