  1. Can anyone give me some information about the 3 to 4 buildings below at the corner of Michigan and Capitol Ave's that were torn down for Lansing city hall and police department? I am interested in the businesses that occupied the locations. Here is a picture below for reference. I believe my family may have owned a business and operated a soda fountain, one of the first in lansing in this stretch. All I have is an old ad that references "steps from the state capitol." Photo credits go to the WSU Virtual Motor City Any help would be greatly appreciated!
  2. What happened to the proposal a while back of the fish ladder being dismantled? I think it's a neat attraction along the river and can be educational for students as well.
  3. Great pictures! How long has Dalmatians been there? I noticed it for the first time when I was visiting my old stopping grounds a few weeks back. I think I'll have to stop by and check it out when I'm in town later this week! I love the new look that REOtown is taking on. I just wish they could work their way down South Street with some much needed improvements. I think a key to this would be doing something with the old train depot that went from restaurant to a night club about 10 years ago. As far as I know it has been empty ever since.
  4. Detroit looks amazing in the summer, but I cant wait for winter to return! I hate this warm weather.
  5. from the random and probably dumb questions section of my brain... I was in Bay City a couple weeks ago visiting my girlfriend's family. While going through a box of old postcards I found one of the State Capitol building in which the dome was primarily a gold color. It was not dated so I could not get a time frame to reference. did the building's dome have a period of glowing color or has it always been white? I was going to purchase it and scan it, but incredibly neither me or the lady had $1.25. LOL! I'll pick it up the next time I'm up there.
  6. I agree about the condition of the Depot. I was in there last week for the first time in about a year and it was really shocking what sort of damage has been done in that time. While in the paper factory the week before we some punk ass teens throwing stuff out the windows on the east side of the tower. It took everything in me from hunting them down. I'm not sure what I would have said, but that sort of destruction is just not necessary. I know the damage they are doing is not hurting anything in the long run, but who gives them the right to destroy what they do not own? Take pictures and memories, leave just your footprints. How hard is that to understand?
  7. I agree LMich. I remember discussion when Olds Park was built about a possible hotel going where the Stadium District is being built right now. Other than that I have never heard a word about any hotels in the city. It probably doesn't help though that we sit right between two larger cities, Grand Rapids and Detroit. Lansing generally just gets the passers through on 96 or 69. The Deluxe Inn is downright disgusting. I wish the city would force it to close, as they have threatened in the past.
  8. Yea, I've seen the video of it falling without the person in there. Lol! Actually, it is not funny at all...until the goofy version with the person in there.
  9. LOL! Yeah, I grow up there my entire life, saw the sign every single day, and even stayed there 2 weeks ago and I got it wrong! I am just used to marriott being the primary brand down here. I think it's time for me to cash in my Lansing Card.
  10. The only hotel of any quality downtown is the Marriott at Michigan and Grand Ave. They have good rates and is really a great downtown hotel. As for food, it all depends on what you want. Washington Blvd and Michigan Ave are both emerging food/entertainment areas. for a good lunch check out Jalape
  11. So as I arrived home from Bay City at 4:30 this morning, the lack of traffic allowed me to examine the beautiful Detroit skyline. It was a welcoming sight to be home, until I noticed that they STILL have not fixed the exterior lighting on the Penobscot building. It is truly one of the most beautiful buildings, when lit properly at night. with the current scheme (just the top tier lit) it looks very awkward. Rant over.
  12. I was over at Moorse Park two weekends ago and I was shocked at how high the river was! It's always high this time of year, but all the extra snow is really showing up down there. the fishing pier next to the canoe landing was under water. In the 3 years since it was built, I cannot remember it being that high (excluding the spring thaw).
