  1. Jazz at the Viceroy! 53 Commerce SW Grand Rapids, MI 49503 Downtown's only speakeasy is reopening this Friday, with Mark Moran playing rags, stride, barrel-house, and society jazz on the piano from 8:00 pm to midnight. See you there!
  2. So, insiders, what is going to happen with the old fifth/third site? Surely something's going in there.
  3. This surprises me. Why would this be? Grand Rapids (West Michigan in general, I think) didn't have a "bubble" per se; house prices stayed relatively normal here (although still too high in many cases.) I wonder if the new-ish drywall palaces in Cascade and other outlying areas contribute to this statistic.
  4. About Pink Boulevard; I was in there last week, looking for a possible dress to wear to a wedding on Saturday. I'm a grown-up lady, with grown-up bumps. The bulk (heh) of their inventory seemed to be aimed at spindly Kendall students. Moral of the story: Adults have the money. Cater to adults.
  5. I just now noticed: I'm a HAMLET ! A Whistle-stop no more! [swaggering around the room like Big Daddy in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof"]
  6. GR3/Dad said: "Festival to me is...like an art festival thrown by Mormon's. " That is hilarious...and accurate! I laughed so hard I alarmed the dog.
  7. Joy, it's interesting that you mention the Transition movement; The NY Times Sunday magazine had quite a nice piece on an Idaho town that is involved: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/19/magazine...ml?ref=magazine Reading that piece was the first I'd heard of Transition, then you go and mention it on this forum. That's how a meme is born! I'm following this thread with interest, bum-crawlers notwithstanding.

  13. Hey, cats and kitties, Saturday, June 9 is the 4th annual Local First Street Party, held outside Bistro Bella Vita, and running from 3pm to midnight. Come look over the vendors; each and every one of them can provide a "shop outside the box" experience and help you keep your hard-earned cash in West Michigan. One of them will be skulking around, cute dog in tow, and foisting her brochures onto hapless passersby. Come join the fun!
  14. Ladies and gentlemen, please raise of glass of your preferred inebriant to the 100th birthday anniversary of the great Katharine Hepburn.
  15. Great comeback, Veloise! ...your fan, Zenstyle
  16. ROWF! ...yip...! See some of you at the Bloctail Party in East Hills this evening!
  17. I neither love nor "hate" Meijer. Their grocery prices are considerably cheaper than the Family Fare near me (Fulton and Carlton) and their selection of everything is better. So why don't husband-unit and I shop there always? Because it takes gasoline and road time to get there! Meijer places themselves far from where people actually live, thus necessitating a car. That sucks mightily, friends.
  18. Gather 'round, Shakespeare fanatics! Thursday, July 6th, 8:00 p.m. Spectrum Theatre on Fountain Street Much Ado About Nothing, ...starring, (among others) yours truly! Well, not starring, exactly; but that's not the point! Come see this comedy, which features romance, mistaken identities, mayhem, skullduggery, and lotsa laffs! 20. Just look at that hideous mass of asphalt. Can you say "run-off?"
  21. Ah! Oberon! I get it now! getting thirsty... I'll order an Oberon in honor of Urban Planet and the downtown theatre!
  22. I'm not sure what The Oberon is, but The Vespa will be in evidence at the Urban Planet meetup, whenever that shall be. ~~~zenstyle, lover of italics
  23. Rizzo, my Vespa's a four-stroke. There's nothing smokey about it. Mau, I'm still in the breaking-in phase (first 600 miles) but it can go 40-ish. It's a 50 cc, I guess it's needless to add. After the warranty period's over, I'm considering having a Malossi kit installed, which would make it a 70 cc. But I'm still thinking about that. Right now, it gets me anywhere I need to go comfortably and in style.
  24. What a gorgeous day! Drive your scooters, bicycles, or motorcycles today! Take the streets! Own your lane! ~~~~Vesparific zenstyle
