  1. Wolfgang Puck farm-to-table restaurant planned to replace Bentham's at Amway. Cornucopia is also being replaced by a Wolfgang Puck express. http://www.mlive.com/business/west-michigan/index.ssf/2014/12/wolfgang_puck_grand_rapids.html#incart_2box
  2. A Canadian-based restaurant chain is moving into McKay tower soon: http://www.wzzm13.com/news/article/272392/14/Canadian-restaurant-chain-to-open-in-downtown-GR Here's the GRBJ article on Freshii: http://www.grbj.com/articles/78195-health-casual-restaurant-chain-picks-downtown
  3. Huntington Bank signed an agreement with Meijer to put in over 90+ in-store branch locations in Michigan. Steelcase is designing the branches and providing the furniture. They are also kicking out all the Chase, Flagstar, and US Banks, so Huntington will be the only bank inside any Meijer store... at least in Michigan. Not sure if this has anything to do with that space at the Alpine Meijer, though... haven't visited that store in a while. http://www.mlive.com/business/index.ssf/2012/05/huntington_bank_plans_to_open.html and http://www.mlive.com/business/west-michigan/index.ssf/201
  4. All tables, chairs, equipment, etc. inside that Quiznos are gone. Pretty sure it's closed.
  5. Rachel Maddow explains it a bit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUpO1QFMDtM
  6. Was biking around downtown yesterday and came across one of the pianos for the ArtPrize entry "Play Me, I'm Yours" by Luke Jerram. I sat down and started playing. A couple people gathered around and watched me play. The owner of El Sombrero came up and offered me free chips and pop. It was a wonderful experience playing a piano on a sidewalk with people watching and cars zooming by.
  7. I read somewhere online a while ago that it was coming to the Village of Orchard Hills. Not sure what the status on that is, though. I love H&M and hope they do open a store here soon.
  8. GR is ranked #12 in the top 15 most underrated cities by HuffPo. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/08/18/10-most-underrated-us-cit_n_683872.html#s128338
  9. Yep. They posted on their Facebook page that the family had a wedding and closed the store for the weekend. It's back open, now. They've also said that they're switching to glass plates instead of serving on the plastic containers. It's really great to hear that the restaurant is doing well.
  10. I thought this was a cool mention. Meijer is #5 on the list of best supermarkets. http://www.walletpop.com/blog/2010/06/14/best-and-worst-grocery-stores-2010/
  11. I've had three souvlakis this year... one yesterday and two today. I could eat it everyday. I should probably stay away from Festival tomorrow...
  12. Shogun has been sold to new owners and is closing April 11th. The new owners plan to remodel the place and reopen with a new menu later this year, still offering sushi.
  13. The posts on Mlive are ridiculous. I just can't believe there's such resentment towards public transportation.
  14. Went downtown last night. I loved the crowds this guy attracted all over the place (though it doesn't seem evident in this picture, there were many groups of people following it, trying to get a glimpse of the man controlling it). I could tell many drivers were upset that this was randomly walking in the middle of the road. At moments, he would stop and and parallel park. It was quite entertaining.
  15. I went to my first swing dancing event at Rosa Parks Circle today. Having been to the ones during the winter at the museum, I felt that they played WAY too much pop music and a lot less swing music than when they were hosting the events at the museum. Throughout the night, there were at least 5 instances where they gathered people up to line dance. And then they played music that was not in any way, shape or form, swing dancing music. I was very disappointed.
  16. The Rapid just announced on Twitter (@TheRapid) that they have just applied to be a part of Google Transit. It's now up for Google to approve and include them in Google Transit.
  17. WZZM 13's traffic reporter attempted to eat it in an hour and failed. There is video. http://www.wzzm13.com/news/news_story.aspx...82&catid=14
  18. Aquinas College Theatre and the Contemporary Writers Series presents the final preview production of WRITER 1272, a new play by Vincent Delaney. Somewhere across our fair land, high school students are frantically sweating over their keyboards, trying to write the perfect college entrance essay. And somewhere, some students are buying their essays from anonymous writers from the internet underground. But who are these writers, and what sort of dreams do they have? Delaney

  22. The construction is pretty much done at the Clyde Park Meijer. The new bottleroom as actually situated outside. I think that is very convenient... I always hate going all the way to milk and cheese just to drop off some bottles. They have replaced the old U-Scan lanes on both the few north south side checkouts and have added no-limit stations to the south side. They still need to replace the old tiles in the U-Scan lanes. They are quite dismal and dirty. The cafe is complete, but it's kind of bland... just a long strip of tables and chairs sitting along the windows. The bakery i
  23. Wyoming Park Theater Company is excited to announce this year’s production: I Never Saw Another Butterfly, the moving story about the children in the Terezin Concentration camp told through one child survivor, Raja Englanderova. The cast and crew of the Wyoming Park Theater Company have been working for weeks, researching the time period, studying their characters, and learning what life was like as Jewish child in WWII. Along with preparing the show, the theater company has decided to sponsor PARA (Programs Assisting Refugee Acculturation), a local organization that helps refugees who are ex
  24. I saw the Detroit Art Museum's commercial today. I could of sworn (and hoped) it was a comercial for GRAM because of the way they presented the artists' names and artwork on the screen, but then at the last 5 seconds, out came the narrator's voice and the Detroit logo appeared. It was very depressing. Why show off Detroit's museum in the GR market? I see it as a kind of an insult to GRAM.
  25. Anyone excited for the Halloween season to begin? The Haunt just launched their new interactive website about two weeks ago. http://www.the-haunt.com They've added a new attraction this year called the Dark Maze. I've been to The Haunt every year since it first opened at the small tile building on 28th St. to the warehouse on Waldorf Ct., and to the current location just down the street on Waldorf. The previous years have been lacking, so I'm hoping this year will change that.
