  1. Well that answers a question I've had since they built the garage. I wondered why they built the garage so far off of Lady Street. I initially assumed it would be right at the street. I guess they were planning on a new building in front of it all along. Very nice!
  2. That was me that posted that I have a buddy doing the graphic design work for the Taste of the South place, and they told him they were putting a "W" across the street. I'll see him this weekend, so I'll ask him about it again.

    Me thinks someone is exaggerating.

"bigger eyesore than the prison." Now THAT'S a rediculous statement. Do y'all not remember what that ancient, falling down prison looked like???
  5. I think the logo is great! I can't imagine why anyone would be complaining about that one.
  6. I heard a juicy tidbit tonight. I had dinner with a buddy of mine that is doing the graphic design for the "Touch of the South" place. He had a meeting with them this week, and they told him that the lot across the street is going to be a "W" hotel. This is pretty reliable info, but I have no idea when an official announcement might come.
  7. Did y'all know that small concrete strip in the middle of the building has the word "Asylum" on it? I find that SO strange that it really did use to be called the "Insane Asylum".
  8. I still can't imagine the opening of the Sheraton is close. It's still a mess from the street view. As for Wachovia renovating 1441 Main, that will be exciting. As a matter of fact, pretty much the ONLY view I have out of my office window is this building...so I'll have a close up view of the renovations. I'll be sure to post some pics when they get started.
  9. Yes it is...and from the one I saw, it doesn't look much like Horizon I at all.

Maybe they CAN get 65 feet tall, but I've lived in SC my whole life, and I've never seen one anywhere near that tall. I'm not sure I've seen many half that size.
  11. No, it's not. The Woodrow Wilson boyhood home is gray. I drove by it yesterday actually.

Thanks for clarifying that digital. I just don't like when someone calls our Pametto's "Palms"...we're not the "Palm State". Whenever I think of Palms, I think of the very tall one's...not our shorter Palmetto's. Not too important I guess...just a small pet peave of mine.

Yeah, they're related. But I was watching a show on something like the History Channel...and they were talking about SC. They said we're the Palmetto State, named after a tree that is a cousin to the taller Palm trees. That's where I got my info.

Those are actually Palmettos, not Palms. There is a difference. Palm trees are those towering trees you see in CA and tropical islands. Palmetto trees are much shorter. (I don't mean to sound like a "know it all"...but I recently read something about this) And I'm glad there are tons of Palmetto trees around Columbia. We ARE the Palmetto State after all. I also realize we need plenty of shade trees, so maybe a good mix of the 2 is the answer.

"Columbia gets more tourists than you think (being the state capital)." I've told people this for a long time. But not just the state capital, SEC football brings THOUSANDS of people to Columbia in the fall. Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, LSU, Alabama, Auburn, etc...each of those schools brings over 10,000 peope to Columbia for the games. They stay all weekend usually and spend lots of money in 5 Points, the Vista, etc. So besides the coast, I'd say Columbia gets a pretty good number of tourists.
  16. Here's the latest pic of the fountain taken from my office. I took the pic yesterday before the water was running. As I drove by today, I noticed that they have the fountain part functioning. The pic kinda makes it look like it's tilted towards the corner...but it's not.
  17. My comment was in reference to this THREAD...not "people from around the world". Quite a few in this thread mentioned Columbia...the ONLY peope to mention Greenville were...well...FROM Greenville. That was my point.
  18. Apparently lots of other people from all over the South would...including myself.

I was in Austin for New Years, and I bought a shot glass that says "Keep Austin Weird". And I thought it was hysterical that so many cars there have bumper stickers that say "Keep San Antonio Lame". LOL (I know...off topic a bit)

A new development coming to 5 Points apparently...but they won't say exactly what. Sounds like retail though. http://www.thestate.com/news/story/149289.html
  21. I haven't taken any recent pics from my office of the fountain because nothing interesting has happened. It's just a small, square, conrete pool painted light blue on the inside right now. If y'all really wanna see that, I'll bring my camera to work tomorrow.
  22. I drive by it everyday, and have never smelled it. But I want it to move because our riverfront has SOOOOO much potential...but as long as that eyesore is there, that part of the river will never develop into anything cool. It may have a small footprint, but there's only so much riverfront. And having that nasty thing taking up so much prime space is such a huge shame. And it's also a shame how little the owners seem to care. (and yes, I realize they're in business to make money)

I'm a fair guy...maybe I should give Augusta another chance. I have a friend that used to live in downtown Augusta, and that's where my distaste for that city came from. But that was a few years back...and as we all know, things certainly change. If the Vista in the 70's and 80's was all someone knew of Columbia, I imagine their opinion would not be very favorable...but if they visited the Vista today, they'd see a new Columbia. My friend now lives in Aiken...so I'm going to suggest that we make another visit to Augusta and see what's happening there.

"Hey, Bry, Augusta is a great city! There's much that they even have over us . . ." Well, we all have our favorite and least favorite cities...and Augusta just happens to be at the bottom of my list. Of course it's just my opinion. They don't call it Disgusta for nothing. But I don't mean to turn this thread into a "bashing Augusta" threat. I was just making the point that USC has helped make Columbia the great city it's become.
