Berkman Tower and Carolina Theater

After many years of decaying, and having many plans for its renovations, it seemed like the theatre would find reuse as the Bechtler museum.http://www.urbanplanet.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=3509

Now that the Bechtler Museum will be grouped with the Mint at 7th and Tryon, there was a question mark as to the historic theatre's fate, especially with arts money tied up in other priorities and debates.

Now, there is a condo tower announced, that could save the theatre at 6th and Tryon.

? how big is a 100 unit building?

It would be great to see Carolina Theater up and running!

Courtside and the Park have around 100 units. I think this would have to be pretty tall, though, because the vacant part of that site (on the corner) is very small. I'm guessing they'd also need to arrange for buying parking from the Hearst deck, as there is clearly not enough room on that land for a dedicated deck.

I was told they are biding thier time due to the flurry of Uptown announcements.....just trying to hit the market at the right moment, however, I'm not convinced that they already missed the boat.....they should have been competing against The Park.

In the Carolina Theatre video the anchor said "like House of Blues". I think that would be a great re-use. During a recent trip to Nashville I went with some friends to the Wild Horse Saloon. While I was there I remarked to my friends that The Carolina could be turned into something similar as we were all impressed with the venue. However I don't know if the raked flooring could be an issue with the Carolina limiting all of the house's floor space to be used for seated space only as opposed to bar space or standing room/table space. I will say with all of the incredible historic detailing inside of the Carolina Theatre this venue could be a real hotspot and could garner national attention.

Where beside the theatre would they be thinking about parking? The article said "next to and on top of the theatre" There isn't much space to work with there which makes me worry about possible demolition. I'm sure they wouldn't have parking enter off of Tryon. The theatre is bound on the back by Hearst and on the side by the Mint Mus. of Craft and Design. Bringing in parking via 6th street risks cutting the theatre off from a Tryon front entrance. Could a deal be worked out with Hearst to use some of their parking or could a rear parking entrance be designed using Hearst's parking entrance as a through area?

I was on Center City Partners website and it looks as if The Carolina Theatre's facade will be dismantled. They say it would be saved for future use either by The Carolina or another development but were claiming it was unstable and a pedestrian hazard.

Haven't seen any mention of this in the news, but last week at the county commissioners meeting they voted unanimously to support that condo project that would go where the old caolina theatre is on tryon. Yesterday there was wood out on the lot and it was being nailed into small frame pieces. Don't know if the two are related, but I hadn't seen any mention on this project so I figured I'd let everyone know it seems like its a go.

I haven't heard any word lately on that project, but I believe the wood frame is being assembled to be attached to the facade which will be removed soon. The facade will be kept in storage for future use.

True, but they still have more art house venues than we do.  We tore all ours down.

I always thought that the Carolina Theater site should have been updated to show first-run independent films. Has anyone ever been to the one in downtown Durham? Very cool. I mean, a typical date night always includes a dinner and a ______? You gotta have something to do after eating a meal at one of our fine establishments Uptown. I guess by the looks of it, the EpiCentre will be addressing this, but hey the more the merrier, right?

I filled in your blank with something inappropriated at first, before I realized we were talking about a movie theatre.

I agree though, I would love for the Carolina Theatre to show first run indy films with the full valet, red carpet service with the ushers dressed in their finest.

During the County Commission meeting this past week or last week, president of the Carolina Theater restoration something, he was hoping that Carolina Theater will attract artists like Alicia Keys and Norah Jones, both are multi Grammy award winning, they are not just any singers, they have bits of Jazz and Soul and they play their own instruments.

Wow, I didn't know the current project included maintaining the site as an entertainment venue. That would be very nice.

And to atlrvr, how often does the typical male think about sex during the day in America? 23 out of 24 hours or something like that?

The Carolina is supposed to be renovated as a music venue if the Camden deal goes through if I'm not mistaken. Didn't we discuss though how much money it would take to restore that theatre and how Camden wouldn't be putting nearly enough money into the theatre for a restoration? I have a friend who recently went into The Carolina and took lots of pictures. I'll see if I can't get some so that every one can see some recent shots of what's inside there. She got a lot of detail pictures of the architectural features. It would be a true shame to not have this theatre fully restored as opposed to renovated. I don't know if Indie films would bring in enough money to pay for that restoration though and folks are still looking at this property from a profit point of view.

Soon we will have an Elizabeth theatre running more indie screens in conjuction with the manor and from what I hear CPCC is considering staring up a film making program (maybe they will build some screening space in ELizabeth). You also have VisArt down there renting everything you can't find anywhere else in Charlotte. So I think we could take a wait and see approach as to how that area could become the focal area for Indie film in the Center City and it's only a short streetcar ride away.

There's the State Theater in Portland, ME. I lived there from 1983-96. There are residences and office above the theater in a mid rise building. The entire building is old, not just the theater. Originally it was a movie house, then a porn film theater for a long time. Then it was restored in the early 90s or so to a live music theater. Some shows included dinner. The Carolina Theatre plans sound a lot like the State Theater. Their website has a photo of the entire building.
