This isn't from a legit. source.. but I heard a rumor that the state is building a type of huge containment area for all of our landfill and waste.. under the city of providence... is this true?! Sorry if this was a dumb post... but I had to ask

Narragansett Bay Commission is building an overflow containment chamber under the city. The city's storm drains feed into the sewer system and overwhelm it when we have heavy rains. This forces untreated waste into the bay. The overflow system will provide a place to store excess stormwater so that the system can catch up and treat it all.

Yes, it's true. Well sort of. It's to prevent waste from entering the bay during times of heavy rain like we just experienced this past weekend. It extends from Charles and Promenade Streets through the city to India Point. Some sort of sewage overfill or overflow system. Our big dig.

It's more interesting to actually see the tunnel boring machines at work, than to read about them. A Discovery Channel documentary would be interesting.

There are actually a lot of these projects happening around the country. I recently read that Astoria, OR was working on one.

Maybe this is a dumb idea... but since we have the boring machine lets keep going!! Why don't we bore ourselfs a subway system. Kennedy Plaza could be the Central Staion with lines running under 95, 195, Route 6 146 and up Smith (for starters). I'd kill to see a system like this in our state.

I wish they would renovate the abandoned East side tunnel, fix the Viagara Bridge, and put use this infrastructure to put in commuter rail that would serve E. Providence, and Bristol County. They could also put in a surface line on Allens Ave for commuter rail - like the Green line in Boston.

Weren't they suppose to dismantle that bridge years ago because it's a safety hazard to mariners?

I thought they were going to tear it down years ago after some politicians son got drunk and climbed it only to fall to his untimely and tragic demise. :shok:

I think it will be a long long long long... long time before we see anything that extensive. But someday something will have to be done about traffic coming from the east, and the Seekonk River poses an obstacle, and the old rail tunnel can't conect to the Amtrak mainline anymore. So someday, a tunnel to the east may happen.

Charles Street re-opened yesterday. [ProJo.com]

I actually just happened to be heading up that way yesterday and got to see the road opened. They are still working at the in Randall Square, so they haven't resurfaced the street, it's all patches. Hopefully, once work is done they will repave the whole thing.

In 10 years, Pawtucket and Central Falls will get a similar tunnel, and the whole system will make a huge difference in the quality of the water of upper Narragansett Bay.
Sweet. I didn't know that. :yahoo:

But there's still the question of what to do with the worm; storing it till the Central Falls extension is too expensive. The contractor, Shank/Balfour Beatty, has now begun dismantling it. The motors will have to be scrapped, but the cutter head might be reusable.

Here's an idea: Work out a deal with the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority to recondition the worm, then set it to work creating a statewide subway system!

All right, time to 'fess up. Did somebody here write that piece?

At least the idea is out there. Probably won't happen in my lifetime, but as long as the idea has been floated, well, you never know.
