Fifth runway ready to take off at George Bush Intercontinental

The Houston Airport System will open a fifth runway at George Bush Intercontinental Airport on Friday, marked by the first official landing on the strip by Continental Airlines.

The $300 million North Runway is part of a $2.9 billion capital improvement plan under way at IAH.

The new runway is 9,000 feet long and 150 feet wide, with 35-foot shoulders on each side. It will be the first runway at IAH to utilize LED Taxiway Edge Light Fixtures, which allow all-weather landings.
