New Virginia Zoo attraction will help keep visitors in loop

Starting this spring, visitors can ride the Norfolk Southern Express, a one-third-scale replica of the first transcontinental railroad.

The train also will circle the next addition, a $15.5 million Asian animal area called Trail of the Tiger, which will break ground about the time the train launches and is scheduled to open in spring 2010.

Featured animals will include Malayan tigers, orangutans, gibbons, sun bears, otters, tapirs, rhinoceros iguanas and giant water monitors. Plans call for underwater viewing of the tigers and otters as well as showers over zoo visitors that will be activated by the orangutans. The city has pledged $6 million toward the exhibit's cost and Frank Batten Sr., retired chairman and chief executive officer of Landmark Communications, which publishes The Virginian-Pilot, has pledged $7 million.

It looks like there is some animal development going on at the zoo now too...naturally. :) This is also mentioned in the article.....

"When the zoo breaks ground later this month on an $18.5 million Asian-animal expansion, Trail of the Tiger, one goal will be to bring in a second tiger species, perhaps Sumatran tigers, and orangutans that can be bred. The zoo

The new director has a huge vision for this zoo. I think we lucked up to get this guy. He wants this zoo to be a top class zoo. I can't wait to what he has in store! It was his idea to get this train around the zoo. The track is already down and the train should be up sometime by the summer time! I can't wait to take my kids on the train.

Here is video from WVEC about the new Trail of the Tiger exhibit. They also have footage of the train tracks towards the end, so you can see what there all about Tel. If this link doesn't go to the video directly, it's entitled "Asian exhibit planned for Virginia Zoo."
