Another section of Wonderwood opens tomorrow

By DAVID BAUERLEIN, The Times-Union

Another piece of the Wonderwood Connector will open to traffic Tuesday after the morning rush hour, according to the Jacksonville Transportation Authority.

The opening will give motorists a four-lane road while traveling the 2.25-mile stretch between Monument and Girvin roads. That part of Wonderwood will join the already completed portion of the connector from Girvin to Mayport Road, including a bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway that opened last year.

The final piece of Wonderwood still awaiting construction is at the Arlington end of the project. JTA plans to start construction later this year from Monument Road to Florida 9A. The projected completion date is mid-2008.

When finished, Wonderwood will run from Florida 9A in Arlington to Mayport Road, near the main gates for the Navy base in Mayport.

When construction of Wonderwood began, the target date for building the entire road was 2003. But the original schedule was obliterated by cost overruns and delays in getting environmental permits.
