The Tri-Cities Area

I just discovered that Bojangles is building or has built a restaurant in Hopewell. They left the Richmond market some years back because of poor performance, I wonder what's changed and whether we'll be seeing any other locations open around town. They have the best chicken of any fast food and their fries are amazing.

They are really expanding right now. They have opened several new locations in the Hampton Roads area after dieing off to maybe one or two just a few years back.

Popeyes seems to be coming back. A few years ago the only one I knew was on Chamberlayne after the others closed. I'd like to try Golden Skillet again... and there seems to be two of those left.

I always liked Popeye's and was surprised there were not many in the Richmond area after moving here from NoVa. The company owns the Copeland Cheesecake Restaurant that pulled out of Stony Point. I thought for years they owned Bojangles b/c they have copy cat menues but they are two different companies.

Petersburg is bringing out the pride of place in many of its residents. Old Town along the Appomattox River has seen a resurgence of interest. A new bi-level transportation center in midtown is close to opening. And what was once a vibrant area known as Halifax Triangle is being touted as a National treasure.

Every now and then, there's talk of reviving Petersburg's harbor. I never knew where it was until my last visit to the city. The Harbor is east of Union Station and not very accessible. But, to me, it looked as if restoration would not be an insurmountable project.

While much of the Richmond MSA is suffering the effects of the economic downturn, the Tri-Cities area (P'burg, Hopewell and Colonial Heights as well as the counties of Chesterfield, Dinwiddie and Prince George) are anticipating considerable growth as a result of BRAC expansion at Fort Lee along the Appomattox between Petersburg and Hopewell.

Army says new 1,000-room hotel on base at Ft. Lee would help local hostelries and other business during construction phase.

I have seen a rendering and it looks pretty pedestrian...sort of like a larger Westin Richmond.

The Army Ordanance School relocates to Fort Lee from Aberdeen, Maryland.

From today's RTD:

http://www2.timesdispatch.com/rtd/news/local/article/FLEE28_20091127-222808/308308/

The Ordanance School campus houses the Army's largest Army-owned and operated dining facility.

And in an earlier story it was revealed that Fort Lee will house the largest Army Ordanance Museum in the USA -- most of its exhibits transferred from Aberdeen.

The second large wave of solidiers are coming in this summer at Fort Lee. By next year the on post population will increase from 15,000 to 45,000.

Petersburg a city that has been skipped time and time again for economic development is looking to be on the up with a new library, Transit Center and the many tobacco and textile warehouses being converted into loft apartments. Some of this growth started before the BRAC announcement but has started to pick up considerably in the past 2 years. Hopefully the soldiers that come here will enjoy what this great region has to offer. Maybe also come back one day to open a business or retire!thumbsup.gif

Change is coming to Hopewells Downtown.

'Among the businesses allowed in this district are antique shops, bakeries, art galleries, barber and beauty shops, bookstores, coffee shops, churches, delicatessen, florists, hotels and first-floor apartments.'

Umm have they forgotten about law firms, marketing agencys, governmant contractors, etc.

At least they have a design committee that plans would have to be forwarded.

The 1000 room hotel on Fort Lee finally received approval from the Senate Armed Services Committee's Personnel yesterday. The facility could be open by as early as 2012.

It looks as if this Army project has leaped the final hurdle.

The original plan was for a 15-story building containing 1,000 rooms with structural capability to add about 500 more in the future.

For various reasons, the height was reduced to seven floors and plans for future enlargement were abandoned. But, it will still be the largest hotel in Virginia.

I suppose it's reasonable to assume that an established hospitality company will manage the facility.

I think the location is on the base south of Rt. 36 between Petersburg and Hopewell.

Thought I should post this to show the bright spots of Petersburg.thumbsup.gif This family back in May of 2006 found this abandoned 1850's home in Petersburg. Today its a hallmark to Petersburg' s progress. This family is just one of the many visionaries revitalizing Petersburg one property at a time. Petersburg has a up and coming downtown, which in a couple of years(i believe) will be another version of Shockoe Slip and Shockoe Bottom.
