Can someone explain what metro means and the population of the metro cities

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

The metro area refers to the central county and all surrounding counties that have a significant affect on the region as seen by the Census Bureau.

Jacksonville has a current estimated metro population of 1,250,000 +/- a few thousand since it is just an estimate.

This includes the following counties:

Duval

St Johns

Clay

Nassau

Baker

Though isn't that usually the definition of the CMSA? Whereas the regular MSA doesn't necessarily use the entire population of the peripheral counties?

Where can I learn more about the new standards for metropolitan areas and new definitions showing the components of the areas?

The metropolitan area (typically a core area such as a central city along with the counties economically and socially connected to it) has long been a popular geographic unit of analysis, and the Census Bureau has long released extensive statistics for these areas.

They answer it in the bold type.
