Looking at Orangeburg County, it would be interesting to see the eastern part (the border between the lighter green and the darker green) hook up with Calhoun County, just because it looks more "congruous," geographically speaking. There wouldn't be much benefit in doing that, but it's just a thought. It would certainly make for a rather narrow county.

Finally got around to reading the whole thread... just a couple thoughts on things discussed... I'm too lazy to quote...

College population...

This is a recurring issue with the Census. Very often college population is double-counted, but rest assured, even if you didn't fill out forms while at college, you were counted. Everything the Census does is somehow tied to federal dollars. It is in your college's best interest to make sure you are accounted for.

Greenville vs Mauldin/Simsponville urban designation...

The Census changed the way they calculated urban boundaries. In the past, a subjective method was employed to determine what was urban and what was rural. For the 2000 census, this determination was made by a computer based upon population patterns (based on population cluster and proximity to it). This model found two population clusters, so two urban areas were defined. With an increasing amount of residential development at Verdae (the largely unpopulated area that splits the two), I could very easily see the two merging again.

The densest city...

While the greater Greenville area may be larger in population than other areas of the state, the downtown area is severely lacking when it comes to dense residential development... but that is changing.

This post is not intended as a city-superiority "shove in the face," but rather an interesting look at how South Carolina is changing culturally because of large numbers of immigrants from all over the World. New faces are moving here and adding to the already great number of international families and individuals who've chosen to reside in our cities.

Interesting reading
