Plan For Landmark Museum, `Arts Avenue' Vividly Sketched

TAMPA - Imagine the old federal courthouse restored as an art museum, with masterpieces hanging on its walls.

Picture transforming Zack Street into an ``arts avenue,'' with bustling galleries and public art dotting the sidewalks.

Envision a new parking garage, with an arts-themed restaurant on the first floor and a gallery on the roof.

And think about a new park where the Tampa Museum of Art now stands, with restaurants and residences nearby.

Although plans are preliminary, Tampa's economic development director, Mark Huey, unveiled a proposal to move the Tampa Museum of Art to the courthouse on Florida Avenue and create an arts district downtown. Huey shared those ideas with art museum board members Wednesday, one day after museum director Emily Kass submitted her resignation.
