New construction takes over downtown Sarasota

Jane Meinhardt

Staff Writer

SARASOTA -- The most dominant feature of downtown Sarasota these days is not any one building, a piece of sculpture or a monument.

It is the flock of construction cranes hovering over the city like giant raptors.

The cranes mark downtown Sarasota's redevelopment and commercial real estate boom.

The construction also indicates a change in the market.

"Residential is driving it all," said Ian Black, president of Ian Black Real Estate in Sarasota. "That's the big change in the market."

All of the posted pics, excluding St. Armand's Circle, are of downtown. For years highrise condo development has hugged downtown's waterfront, however there are now several highrise projects filling in the area's away from the Bay.

Sarasota burbs and bedroom communities include Cresent Beach, Venice, Englewood, North Port and Lakewood.

I believe St Armands Circle was originally developed by John Ringling during the 1920's, or at at least envisioned by him then and developed later.

The circle handles alot of traffic as it is on the main road connecting downtown Sarasota with City Island and Longboat Key. The diameter of the circle is much larger then the new circles I've seen like the nightmare circle in Clearwater Beach so there is plenty of room for people to merge into and out of traffic.

There is parallel parking around the entire circle and a number of other traffic calming features. Its really not as chaotic as it looks in the picture posted above.
