On PBS, a stunning visual account of St. Johns River

Tonight's Water's Journey is an upbeat though cautionary journey of discovery.

By NANCY MCALISTER, Special to the Times-Union

Water's Journey, The River Returns (8 tonight, WJCT TV-7) takes viewers on a multidimensional tour of the mighty St. Johns River. Shot in high definition with footage that includes dark underwater caverns and expansive, high-flying aerials, the hour is a stunning visual account of Northeast Florida's signature natural resource.

And though it raises warnings about pollution and strains posed by population growth, good news about restoration efforts is the narration's strongest undercurrent. The conclusion: Much is being done to protect the water the Seminole Indians called the River of Lakes. And by understanding our connection to this 310-mile force that slowly flows north, we can safeguard its use by future generations.

The River Returns looks at the St. Johns River from a variety of angles after a hurricane season that saw water levels rise to an 80-year high. Part history, science and extreme sport, it features explorer-aquanauts Wes Skiles, Jill Heinerth and Tom Morris, and an expedition involving more than 50 people. Starting at the mouth of the river on the Mayport Ferry, they travel two weeks toward the vast marsh north of the Everglades near the source.
