Adaptive-reuse project in FreeMoreWest targets retail - Charlotte Business Journal (bizjournals.com)

Great news for these older brick buildings in front of 83% leased The Refinery office building.  The article states that the brick buildings will deliver 4200 square feet in total, and Whiteside/Red Hill Ventures will preserve  and restore them for neighborhood retail uses on the ground floor, and for their own offices on the 2nd.

Perhaps wishful thinking, but I'd love to see this stretch of West Morehead between I-77 to Freedom as a comfortably walkable, village-style shopping/dining/entertainment district.  Charlotte needs more "Main Street" retail corridors.  Could start with on-street parking, pedestrian islands, and signage, as you'll need design-intuitive "devices" to slow some of the speeding vehicles on Morehead so that it's more welcoming to pedestrians.

Finally! Been waiting for a long time for someone to take a stab at bringing retail/dining to those buildings. I agree with the thought of that stretch being a ripe for an entertainment strip.

And all it takes is one genuinely cool, unique place to open (but that's the bullseye that's easy to miss), and then momentum--via coat-tailers, copycats and wannabes--just takes over from there.

Third and Urban out of Atlanta is finishing up their Lower Tuck office and retail building conversions.  There is 260,000 sq ft of space to lease.

Third & Urban plots next moves in Charlotte as office, retail project on west side nears completion - Charlotte Business Journal (bizjournals.com)

""No tenants have been confirmed yet but the developer says it has about 185,000 square feet of prospects at the property right now, in various stages of interest and negotiation.  "We’re starting to see the office and retail markets really pick up in a big way," said Pierce Lancaster, managing partner at Third & Urban.""

I do think this creative office space 1-2 stories with multiple entrances and exits will be very popular in the post pandemic world like in this area, some in Southend, Camp Northend, NoDa, the Mill District etc.

Jay Street was treelined with healthy oaks about 10 years old - very recently they chopped all of them down and seemed so unnecessary.  Now the street looks a lot less desirable and, quite frankly, like it's about to be oppressively hot with little escape given the 5+ days of 90+ heat we're about to experience.

Bleh, knew in my gut that it would either be self storage or another warehouse but held out hope. I guess not much else you can do in the floodplain though

And don't forget SF-based Swinerton, commercial construction company, occupying 8,000+ square feet at nearby adaptive reuse project called Station West, along Berryhill Road.
