Work on permanent casinos takes a step forward

By Robert Ankeny

April 29, 2005 2:08 PM

The Detroit City Council on Friday approved rezonings for the permanent sites of Greektown Casino L.L.C. and MotorCity Casino L.L.C. The action came a day after a 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling in the long-running lawsuit over Detroit casino licensing appeared to clear the way for construction to start on the permanent casinos.

Also Friday, the attorney representing the Indian tribe whose court action has been blocking construction said his client will not appeal the ruling.

The wait is not over yet, shovels have not been put in the ground. This is a great announcement for the city. Hopefully, the architects don't ruin the designs for the new casinos. Does anyone have any renderings of all three of the new casinos?

All of those are the most recent renderings with the Greektown having gone through quite a few, Motor City having gone through 2 redesigns, and MGM having gone through 2 as well.

They may very well change entirely, but I really don't think any of them will change that much since these redesigns were the proposals submitted and approved by the city before the court battle.

I wonder if there will be some groundfloor retail at the new casinos? Maybe some popular stores like Las Vegas. I can picture an ESPN ZONE Billboard hanging off the building all lit up like Vincente's. The renderings do show the buildings really helping the streets. What are those, fountains, near the entrance to Greektown? I don't like Motor City's rendering.

I dont even really pay attention to MotorCity because it isnt downtown. MGM and Greektown are gonna have the greatest impact on the downtown scene. It will be nice that our skyline will change but I want these Casinos to go up so spinoff development can occur. Especially around MGM. There are so many surface lots around the northwestern edge of downtown hopefully people will build around MGM. It would be nice to see some residential be put in Trappers Alley where Greektown currently is. It is also going to be interesting to see how the businesses in Greektown are affected after the Casino is moved several blocks to the north.

The casino's are updating their plans, and those plans must be approved.  But look for more drama with Greektown.  They are building another parking deck at their current location, while the county is talking about a justice headquarters on the land which was to house the new hotel.  Some things don't add up.

I didnt hear that the county was looking at the site just north of where they are now. I thought that land was designated for the casino. I would like to see the Greektown plan go through because I think it would have the most positive effect on development downtown.

If I'm not mistaken, the city is NOT looking at the casino's land. They are contemplating building a justice complex at a not yet announced location in the city which would then free up the blocks across from the Greektown Casino site.
