VCU Developments

Also, the building looks pretty cool for me.  I'm very excited for this.

I am too!  Hopefully, this the start of a major makeover in that area of downtown.  Next up will be the new arena and all the development associated with the plan NH District Corp is putting together, which includes the arena (of course), a new 400+-room hotel (surely will be a nice highrise), and maybe some new housing (may become highrises)!  This area of downtown may become the next development hot spot!

Back to a previous post, this article from January 2005 mentions the replacement of the North Hospital.   Though I am not sure if this is part of the current master plan.

Until there's some new building stuff to look at, guess I'll talk about this one.  This is from the webcam for VCU Gladding residences.  Looks decent from this perspective - a courtyard for activity with the building wrapping around it.  Seems XXL from the angle, a lot of students to pile in and out of here.   How many beds again?

I really like this one, VCU’s second best  new building IMO (their best is the I M Pei building).

Really? To each their own I suppose then, I found this to be one of the worse buildings of the recent building boom. I really liked the University Learning Center on Floyd and the Cabell library addition. This is just a monstrosity (great for density, but I'm very meh on the design and how it turned out imo)

Thanks for the groundbreaking information!  Really?  Demo is halfway done?  That's moving quickly if true!

Yep, I'd say demo is well underway!

They were scheduled to break ground today.  Hope it happened...I haven't heard any reports that it has.  Was scheduled for 0930 this morning.  Can anyone confirm?

The whole site should be cleared now, if I had to guess.  This photo is several days old.

Wow!  Thanks for the info on the second tower!  That’s located in a very prominent location and can be clearly seen from I-95...and up on the hill!

Looking forward to seeing a design!

Just wanted to put this here.  This is a rendering from the opposite perspective than what we've seen before and let's you see the other side of the building and how it will be laid out.  At close inspection, it appears that those ARE cars on the front left side.  Looks like the first 7-8 floors will be a parking deck with about 11 levels of parking...if what I'm seeing is correct.

GRC is looking extra good at night.

I was worried about how the old Branch Baths building would be incorporated. Looked dorky in the drawings.

I think the solution in real life is quite elegant.  The treatment is museum quality.  The only nod to the old building is the colour of the landscape bricks around the base, which grounds it to the property.   The rest of it it just there not trying to have any organic relationship with the new building at all.   It is totally different but looks natural enshrined in the monolithic dorm (think of a baby crab inside of an oyster).

I just love everything about this building.  It’s so classic university and so clean and efficient.  Bravo.

Thanks for posting these photos. I get a different perspective of this building than I get on the web cam.  Plus, it’s been so quiet on the board today...I was thirsty for some development news/status!  Thanks for breaking the silence!

Awesome, thanks eandslee!

Anybody know if they've started on the Engineering School expansion yet, at Cary and Belvidere?

Glad I could help!

They've broken ground and there is some equipment on site, but there are no cranes as of yet.  You can zoom into the last image using the link below and get a general sense of what's going on there:

Just drive past the site 5 minutes ago.  They’ve dug the dirt out, it’s a big deep pit at the moment...so moving pretty fast.

On a a related note, the new apartment building at Laurel and Cary is moving along very quickly.  Footings are dug, forms (well rebar) is going up.

Awesome find,  will look every day now!  This site, which is huge,  is right next to the proposed arena development. Can you imagine what this area will look like in 3-4 years. When I see comments about how the arena development may be the next 6th street market place,  I say,  no way.  With this hospital and the site next to it likely next, there's now way that with the changing area, plus the new demographics for Richmond that arena and the surrounding area will be anything like the 6th street market.

6th street failed because the space wasn’t workable and there was an effort to keep out national retailers.  They wanted to keep it filled with local retailers.  Who wants that? No one.  That’s who.

I drove up  from Gloucester to have my senior prom (1987) dinner there.  Some  seafood place.

Thats probsbiy the only time that I ever spent any money there.  I moved here for VCU that fall and tried to give it my hard-earned work study money but they didn’t make it easy.

Richmond today is such a different place from 90s Richmond.  The 6th Street marketplace comments are more of a statement on the people making them than the proposal at hand.
