Unity Park (New 160 Acre West End Park)

Meadowbrook Park is a historic name. The old Greenville Spinners used to play at Meadowbrook Park, which was either at the specific site or near to the site of the new Meadowbrook Park.

Here is a mention of it in an article about the Northgate Soda Shop (Nolan Ryan used to eat at the Northgate when he was a minor-leaguer playing at the old Meadowbrook Park).

The ball field shown here is, I believe, Meadowbrook Park...it's just off of Mayberry Street (hence the earlier name of "Mayberry Park"). If I recall correctly, the original Reedy River Master Plan from a few years ago had called for the G-Braves to build their downtown ballpark on this same site.

WSPA reported this story yesterday, although the 180-acre park, which will be located along the Reedy River just west of downtown, has obviously been in the works for at least a few years now. I am glad to finally see the artist's renderings and hear an update directly from Mayor White. He has been the primary enthusiast for this project since its earliest proposal.

The Journal has an article about this park. Mayor White says that Public Works should be relocated out of the area by the end of 2012. The city owns 70% of the land already intended for the the park's use. It will be similiar in size to Atlanta'a Piedmont Park.

White projects a 5-10 year build-out.

It's nice to hear some "hard" facts, more or less about this project. HOPEFULLY this will lead to some redevelopment and investment even before this thing truly takes off... This is going to be HUGE!

City Council will vote tonight on a plan to buy 33 acres on Fairforest Way for a replacement Public Works facility. The city would spend $3.1 mm for the land and to prep the site. Funding will come from the 'Stormwater Fund'.

Obviously this is in preparation for moving these facilities out of the Reedy River Park footprint.
