West Tampa Plan Gets Funding

By SHANNON BEHNKEN [email protected]

TAMPA - Developer Ed Turanchik said Monday that he has lined up $10 million to build at least 60 homes near downtown, a project the city hopes will help attract more residents and businesses to West Tampa.

The joint-venture between Turanchik's InTown Properties and the West Tampa Community Development Corp. includes financing from the Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union and GTE Federal Credit Union. More details will be released at a community meeting Wednesday night.

``It's something West Tampa needs,'' said Margaret Fisher, chairwoman of the West Tampa CDC. ``We're very excited.''

Turanchik, a former Hillsborough County commissioner, who led an ambitious but failed Civitas development plan in central Tampa, said prices have not yet been determined for this latest venture but will start in the mid-100s.

West Tampa is an inner city neighorhood boxed in by the Hillsborough River to the east, Dale Mabry on the West, Columbus Drive on the north and Kennedy Blvd to the south.

Historically, its the twin of Ybor City and loaded with old cigar plants and casitas, as well. The main streets are Main St., Howard and Armenia Avenues.

Unfortunately, like Ybor, it went downhill when I-275 was constructed right in the middle of it.
