Wow this thread has been dead for a while! I just saw this article on the Mosaic development that JCSU wants to have open in time for the DNC. the #D light display under 77 is supposed to be open in time for the CIAA in February it looks like. Here is the link to the article.

Didn't know where to put this (and am kind of surprised it hasn't been posted), but Childress Klein Properties will build a 300,000 square foot building that will be leased by the VA for the VA Charlotte Health Center.  At $150 million, this is a pretty big deal that will have some good employment numbers to go along with it.  Here's the piece from the Observer: http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2013/09/11/4305588/va-awards-contract-for-charlotte.html#.UkXaw4ashcY

Pretty cool comments at the end of the article. What do you think about trying to get it moved to the Eastland Mall site?

Well, since Childress Klein will own the building (and they already own the land on which it will be built), I doubt it's a possibility.  Construction is slated to begin in January.

I think Tyvola makes a lot more sense than sticking it in East Charlotte.  What a great addition for all the veterans in the area, which is a lot more than I realized.  Much needed.

This is great.

While it is unrelated, I found this story about the large coalition that recently housed 100 homeless veteran in 100 days. (The local VA was a part of the coalition)

The act of kindness from the local community have convinced me yet again, that my city truly is a special place.

^ yeah but what percentage would you say that is? I honestly don't know. It could be 1% or 3 out of every 10. Just cant see why any developer would choose to build in one area for a small fraction (assuming based on no knowledge) of would be transit riders. If there is enough demand, just throw more buses out there.

It's only 5 miles away from The center of uptown. I wouldn't call the place suburbia really. Eastland mall is 6 miles away, for comparisons sake.

I think it's a positive for the area and hopefully it will help urbanize the area even more. I like this location a lot. This area is sandwiched between South Blvd. & the airport. Lots of potential. Hopefully the new growth is smart growth (more Southpark less Ballantyne)

Honestly the Westside is the "Last Frontier" for development, so I'm happy to have the VA coming to this part of town. Hopefully we will see more activity on the Westside, as it seems to be the last place large scale development can occur within the city limits.

Since there is no forum dedicated to Dixie Berryhill, should this forum change its name to it since Johnny Harris is again talking about it being the next "big development"?

Also, while this forum is still called The Westside and not Dixie Berryhill yet, what development is going on at the Northeast corner of Billy Graham and West Blvd? (Apologies if this has been posted before):

It's called The Renaissance. It's a CHA deal. 100+ senior units and 200+ mixed income units. There's also a future school planned at the site.

Johnny Harris is saying that Charlotte needs a new growth area because land in Ballantyne is running out, but is Mr. Harris full of it?

^ Funny, but I'll answer if a different way.  From a infrastructure capacity yes.  Could you imagine the traffic if all that was triple the density.

I do hope that as part of any plans for the FAR west side that Harris talked about, Light Rail is part of the infrastructure planning.  Do the line to the airport, and extend it to be a central part of any new master planned commercial area.

A lot of people thought he was full of it when he said a large cow pasture off 485 was the next big thing
