from the Charlotte Retro twitter feed today.  This is an ad for Wesley Heights lots from 1922

My grandmother lived in Wesley Heights when she was young and worked at Belks uptown.

Wow, what a great find!  It's just amazing to think that, back in the day, Charlotte had not 1, but 2, street car lines (Hoskins and Seversville) that served Wesley Heights.   Meanwhile,  we're still waiting for Phase 2 of the LYNX Gold Line out Beatties Ford Rd to  French Street to become a reality.   As this classic Ad says, that would be a "Ray of Sunshine"  :tw_glasses: for the Queen City.

The Excelsior Club is officially on the market: Any chance a buyer would have creative re-use and infill in mind?

History:

Context: The site is owned by a state Representative, whose late husband got it after foreclosing on the last owner. The Historic Landmarks Commission was attempting to do

The development is the latest in a string of troubles for the club that once hosted performers such as Nat King Cole and Louis Armstrong and politicians including Bill Clinton and Al Gore.

Last year, Cunningham, who inherited the club from her husband, foreclosed on James Ferguson, a prominent civil rights attorney who had bought the club. The year before, the club faced nearly $13,000 in fines for code violations.

Cunningham said she wanted to restore the club as an event venue, but the filing with the Landmarks Commission suggests that hasn't worked out. She deferred questions to Dan Morrill, the commission's executive director

The Excelsior opened in 1944 when Jimmie McKee bought a seven-room, two-story house in Washington Heights and transformed it into a private club. At a time when African-Americans had little access to other social clubs, the Excelsior became a magnet.

Cole and Armstrong played there. Dozens of other politicians campaigned there. Over the years, it hosted wedding receptions, voter rallies and Tuesday Night Fish Fries. It's where excited patrons gathered in November 2008 to celebrate the election of America's first black president.

The western bound of that Park and Shop property is De Herradora Avenue, as mellifluous a name as can be imagined. Poetry. A quick search says that there was a De Herradora family living in Charlotte in the 1930-1940 period and the father was from Madrid. How unusual that must have been. The family address was not in that location but in Wilmore so no further help for the sense of place.

This seemed to fly under our radar. It kinda seems like Enderly Park is skipping a step in the gentrification ladder?

WSOC also reports on plans for a martini, wine and tapas bar at 3131 Tuckaseegee Road, in the Enderly Park neighborhood in west Charlotte. However, neighbors at a public hearing on the project at last night's City Council meeting expressed concerns about a lack of parking. The project will come back before the council for a vote at a later meeting.

and a hearty FU to everyone who whines about lack of parking with reuse projects of any kind.

Something makes me think this has been discussed before but…

CBJ reports on some new office space coming to West End adjacent to Mosaic.

Quote

Such commitments, combined with the streetcar, are fueling larger ambitions. Mike Griffin, whose family built Mosaic Village, an 80-suite student residential and retail center encompassing 125,000 square feet that opened in 2012, called the streetcar “a tremendous boost.” He attributed Griffin Brothers’ near-term plans for a 70,000-square-foot office building adjacent to Mosaic Village on West Trade Street to the arrival of the Gold Line. Tenants will include design and planning firms Neighboring Concepts and Shook Kelley, which are already located nearby and have been involved in area projects.

We are certainly seeing a healthy new ring of boutique office adjacent to every corner of uptown.
