As i was looking at the faded detroit pix i was noticing there is defiantly a crane being assembled there. I almost wonder if they will not try to sneak something at night, just enough to make it un saveable

This is from the free press article:

Jim Turner, a member of the city's Historic District Commission who has voted against demolition, said Wednesday that the Ilitch family had neither made a case for the building being structurally unsound nor tried to sell it for the requisite 12 months before seeking permission to raze it. He blamed Kilpatrick for Wednesday's action.

So you have to try and sell a building for a year or prove it to be structurally unsound before you can demolish it? That's a new one to me.

I agree that the demolision company should lose their licence on this since it is so obviously illegal. Also, if the owner (Illitch) has anything to do with the illegal razing of a building, they should forefeit the rights to the property. This needs to be made a law as it has happened so many times in the past. If this is the result of the city, well, what do you do? Fine them more? The city is so far in debt because they try to act above the law. Maybe they should sue the specific person who issued the permit. That would make people think twice.

On another note, are the holes in the sides of the two building because they connected to the building in the middle or a result of "careless" and I use that term loosely. I'm sure being connected like they were would cause some damage.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Yep. The Ileeches have done neither, and it is exactly why the HDC has repeatedly denied their requests to demolish the buildings.

For those of you who will be in the area....

City council approved a public gathering on the sidewalk across from the hotel as well as the grassy median on Madison. The gathering is in response to the questionable demolishion of the Madison Lenox hotel and will be held from 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM Friday May 20th.

It's public art and they are all over downtown. They were placed sometime after May 7th and before the 14th. I heard there are also some in Windor, but I have been unable to confirm. I have also been looking for an article that talks about these and haven't been able to find one. Has anyone else?

Nah, I think it will go Adams Theater, then UA. Not like it matters. In Ileech's hands both structures are doomed. The theater portion of the UA is totally gone anyway...that's just what happens when a building doesn't have a roof. Water pours into the theater even if it hasn't rained for weeks. The UA office building is in surprisingly good condition, but I can see it going downhill fast.

The city will do nothing. Just like they have for all the illegal demolitions in the past. Illtich gets his damn parking lot. Detroit looks a bit uglier, until some windfall project comes along and we see some measurable progress. I'm so glad Illitch doesn't own property in the core of the CBD. Look how great Campus Martius Park looks and then you go into Illitch's portion of town, which aesthetically, looks like crap (except for the Fox) which I hope he is taking care of..

Who would have thought that after he moved Little Caesar's headquarters downtown and renovated the "fabulous Fox Theater" Mike Illitch would become one of the worst slumlords in this city's history. After this episode I am really over Illitch and family. I am starting a personal boycott of all Illitch enterprises. I haven't bought a Little Caesar's pizza in years so that one is easy. I'm also staying out of the Fox Theater and Motor City Casino and no more Tiger's or Red Wing's games, in person or on TV (couldn't afford hockey tickets anyway). I'm not under any delusion that my little boycott will in any way affect the fortunes of the Illitch empire but I can't, in good conscience, allow my money to go to enrich the people responsible for so much Detroit history being torn down and paved over.

Yeah, well people should be upset with Illitch more than ever. In fact, the Madison Lennox is one of the smalle buildings he's demolished. Let's not forget about the massive Wolverine Tower and old YMCA. For some reason, I don't think those were actually on the stadium site. Rather they were demoed for the Woodward parking lots.

There aren't many photos of Wolverine Tower, and the only one I got was the Wolverine Towers Building in Ann Arbor. Anyone have photos?

EDIT: I kind of found it amusing how urbanplanet dominates all the google results. I type in Wolverine Tower, and I see a thread to the Barry Sanders Project here, as well as several other Detroit threads.
