StevenRocks 2 Report post Posted September 21, 2005 Which area is going to topple south park? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> To be sure, SouthPark is going to retain its upscale crown for a generation or so. But, the Lake Norman area could potentially be more upscale than SouthPark in a decade or two, or the tide could shift to a heavily gentrified Uptown area. Keep in mind that all of this is just speculation.

monsoon 1 Report post Posted September 21, 2005 or Weddington <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Possibly, but weddington only has about 7000 residents. There are neighborhoods at the lake that are larger than that.
peaceloveunderstanding 0 Report post Posted September 21, 2005 It would probably be weddington, marvin, and waxhaw. I don't see that area obtaining a mall anytime soon though due to a lack of any real infrastructure.
appatone 14 Report post Posted September 21, 2005 Actually, Cureton (on Providence between Waxhaw and Weddington) has begun construction. It is supposed to be similar to Birkdale. There out moving dirt as we speak so we'll see what happens in Western Union Co. The project wil include 500,000 sq. feet of retail and commercial space. Not sure how that stacks up against other regional centers.
StevenRocks 2 Report post Posted September 21, 2005 500,000 sq. feet of retail at Cureton is a little small compared to a regional mall (typically 750,000 sq. feet and above), but it's nothing to sneeze at.

monsoon 1 Report post Posted October 17, 2005 Apparently the additional traffic being generated by the Piedmont Center being built in SouthPark is requiring the city to add at least one additional light on Fairview. This is causing the poor SP troglodytes to become upset about the additional delays caused by the new lights. (It was bad in 1985 when I lived there. I can't imagine what it is like now) Does Buckhead have the same problem or is it better served by mass transit?
peaceloveunderstanding 0 Report post Posted October 18, 2005 Buckhead has 2 MARTA stops. It worked quite well when I visited. It also has many lights and is quite a congested area.

eastsider 770 Report post Posted October 22, 2005 The Hanover Company website has a few more renderings of The Village at SouthPark. http://www.hanoverco.com/sub.asp?p=Portfolio Click on the mid-rise tab and move the cursor over the projects till you find it (it's been in different places both times I've been on the site). A2 5 Report post Posted December 2, 2005 (edited) A front page article is in the CBJ this morning concerning a HUGE mixed use project coming to SP. It looks like the owners of the Nursing home are going to give up the current use for one that incorporates more shops, restraunts and resedential units. Hmmmm, I wonder how verticle we get. Any guesses ? Currently there is a huge effort on behalf of property ownwers along Fairview selling their property to developers. In 3-5 years I would say that all of that land will have been developed between Park and the SP mall. It is already the 2nd largest area of office space in both Carolinas (only behind Charlotte). From my perch in Uptown you can already see a mini skyline forming. I would assume if Novare moved forward with some more towers this will only become a more noticable "skyline" from Uptown. This area is getting dense and getting dense quick. A2 Edited December 2, 2005 by A2

A2 5 Report post Posted December 2, 2005 Just to humble you A2, Buckhead in Atlanta has more office space than Uptown Charlotte. correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't Uptown Charlotte have more occupied space in Uptown than Downtown Atlanta? A2
atlrvr 4225 Report post Posted December 2, 2005 As far as occupied space it's probably pretty close.....according to one submarket definition of downtown Altanta yes...another no. We have about 13.5M square feet of occupied multi-tenant office space.....the most generous number for downtown Atlanta would put them around 16M occupied.....it'll get closer with the Wachovia Tower, but keep in mind they are finishing two office towes (in the 12-15 story range) in downtown......ultimately Charlotte' downtown will probably surpass Atlanta's "downtown" but never downtown and midtown merged....and SouthPark will never come close to Buckhead which just has so much more area to build and better transportation access.
