Here’s another shot from the O article.  Are we 100% sure that Johnny Harris didn’t come here in a time machine from Ancient Rome?

That is 100% an already designed tower for Cesar's Palace that was never built 30 years ago but Johnny loved the architecture so much from his "global" travels

Y'all's comments on Lincoln Harris's new tower at Phillips Place or as I like to call it The Forum  made Charlotte Ledger's email newsletter LOL.

From the Ledger this morning:

""The online forum Urban Planet was alive with comments about the project on Tuesday:

“You know, I’m not one to complain, but this monstrosity is aesthetically awful. This building is nothing more than a Las Vegas hotel and casino minus the glitzy lights and over-the-top signage and banner.”

“Looks like a squished down, fattened Legacy Union with a crap parking deck pooped out the rear and right.”

“Looks like the HQ of a multi-level marketing firm that sells cosmetics to cure aging.”

“(It’s) like [Legacy Union] checking its reflection in a funhouse mirror.”

“This is just a placeholder render, right?”

“Looks much like a hospital.”

“This angle of the back shows the worst of it. It’s an ’80s postmodern tower shrunken down with a ’90s postmodern tower tacked on the front.”

“I think Lincoln Harris is trying to run a ‘pyramid’ scheme LOL.”""

There was talk at my office this morning of how bad it is. You think if more quotes get out we can shame them into changing it?

Joe Bruno:  "Attorney Collin Brown says Johnny Harris’ vision for this site is a 'signature building.' "  Well based on this reaction he may have gotten his wish.  At least this stands out among anything else in Southpark.  Be careful what you wish for!

That aside, yes, the design is hideous, but I'm even more bothered by the height.  When you start putting up buildings that are out of scale with the surroundings, that starts impacting neighborhood aesthetics negatively.  The Southpark area has a very classy feel about it.  Out-of-scale structures will start eating away at that classy feel and can ultimately ruin what made the area attractive in the first place.  They need to work on design and bringing down the height.

I will be surprised if they (Neighborhood) prevail in their efforts to lower the height of this planned building.  There were some in Ballantyne that did not like the Height of the now finished Panaroma Tower (not sure how tall but dont think its 250') because you can see it from some homes within the adjacent Ballantyne Country Club.

Lincoln Harris may not have this amount of pushback if he tried to build something of this height at his Capitol Towers III Parcel which is further from Subdivisions.

Hideousness of the building aside, let’s not pretend this building isn’t the most South Park building ever. Weirdly out of scale, faux fancy, and a Harris development to boot. I think it fits right in with the mid rise Hilton hotel next to the shopping center.

I say all this with love as a former resident of the area

I dont have a problem with the height at all.  It is surrounded by apartments and other retail.   The above poster is right everything is out of scale in Southpark.  Look at the RH store.  It is twice the height of the other retail spaces.  Just noticed there is a Duke substation right behind it.  as for the design not the biggest fan but it does kinda fit in with Phillips Place faux architecture.    The adjacent apartments along Fairview Road were great looking back in 1970s when they were built.  I am surprised that whole complex has not been rebuilt.   ( https://madisonsouthpark.com/ )

I like it for SouthPark. I like the way the front looks from the pedestrian level. I think it looks great. The street presence where it needs to be decent is decent in context of the area. The Parking deck is fine for the area though it would be nice if it had at least some green space on the top floor of the Parking deck or had been a roof top brewery.

My main critical comment is that I wish they could have incorporated the movie theatre in this project. The movie theatre was a community amenity and I'm not too fine with community amenities being torn down and not have it incorporated within the new projects or at least some type of civic replacement.

The movie theater was almost always dead the past 7+ years.  I mean it was perfect for me because I hate people talking, etc....but they never put a dime into the theater and it showed.  Regal Stonecrest is a much better experience.  As for the building...well it's no boobies from sky like Capital Towers.

Has  Regal Stonecrest been renovated anytime recently?  I always thought it was kind of dingy.  Chapel Hill's one advantage of Charlotte is cinemas.  Silverspot, which is a small Florida chain with a branch off Franklin St., is really nice.

Regal Stonecrest finished up renovations just before Covid started.  All recliner seats, full bar added to the lobby.  It's not like a "new" theater but recliner seats and a place to get a beer is all I care about.

Thanks.  I haven't been there in about six years.  It sorely needed renovations.   They did something similar to the theatre at the SouthPointe Mall in Durham.  It was deplorable compared to Silverspot, but after a total renovation, it's now very nice.

Yeah Stonecrest is now "solid".  Nothing mind blowing but they have the extras you  need and they also have all of the formats for movies as well.  IMAX, 4D, and RPX.
