Actually if memory serves me correctly, I believe that Burger King restaurant has been at that location at least since the late 80's.  It conceivably could have been a franchise which would not necessarily operate under a BK name so to speak.  But in terms of a overall BK presence, I will let @KJHburgor  @tarhoosierto confirm my comment since they have been long time residents of the city.

Yes that Burger King has been there for a long time and there was a Bennigans next door that was quite the social place back in the day.  "Meet me at Bennigans for a drink"  LOL

anyway from Southpark today.  The Colony apartments look great and are open.  The site is ready to start the Publix and retail there.  As someone said everything in Southpark just looks better than some other areas of town.  Nucor is in their 2nd building on Rexford Rd.  thus doubling their office space locally and they are a Fortune 500 company.  They renovated this building after Lendingtree pulled out of going into it.  

 

Last set of photos are the MillCreek apartments Modera at Southpark 7 stories of apartments in front of the Liberty retirement center and Canopy by Hilton Hotel.  The apartments are rising on the old home now gone of the Eastern Airlines reservation center.

Southpark is still evolving into a more urban center.

We used to call that Burger King THE BK LOUNGE when I went to Myers Park High in the late 80s. It was a popular place for students that skipped class.

I grew up on the other side of the state from Charlotte. In the late 80's my friends and I also called our (lone) Burger King the BK Lounge. Was there some cultural thing I don't remember for people to do that?  A movie, a song a commercial?

I'm a bit younger so my experience with BK Lounge was the Dane Cook (ugh) skit from the early 00's.  But Urban Dictionary has a few reasons.  One being below.  Other history from Northwestern students calling the one in Evanston that in the 70's.  De La Soul having a song in the early 90s mentioning the BK Lounge.  Who knew!

Don't know anything about the brand (except for a women's paisley blouse for $450 on their website seems on the pricier end of things) but looks like a Veronica Beard will be coming to Phillips Place.  Quoting the above, since this chain doesn't have many locations across the US (Denver is smallest city currently where they have a store), but they do have a location in Highland Park Village.

Man it looks like the Publix is almost done! LOL.

How many stalled Publix is this in SCLT now?  Carmel Commons, not started for many years.  Arboretum isn't started yet.  SouthPark isn't started that I can see.  They were going to put one at Providence and Fairview on Levine land that never materialized.

dont forget the uptown Publix.   Publix announces way out and then takes it times to build it out.

Well Yes because Publix was intended for Phase 1.  Phase 1 is now just apartments.  According to this January 2022 Axios article, Publix construction would begin spring 2022.  Here we are spring 2023 and I haven't seen anything going on at that corner. 

Side note: who is paying $3000/m for a 2BR apartment that looks out onto that wasteland??!!  I mean maaaaaaybe when its fully built out and walkable around there.

Here is what the April 8 2022 article from the Biz Journal says about the Publix store here:

""Publix Super Markets Inc. is moving forward with its plans for SouthPark.

The Lakeland, Florida-based grocer confirmed it has executed a lease for a 60,000-square-foot store as part of The Colony redevelopment. It will be at the southwest corner of Sharon and Colony roads.

Publix was named as the anchor tenant back in 2020 — but the grocer did not confirm those plans at that time.

Charlotte-based Synco Properties and its partner, Schlosser Development Corp. out of Austin, Texas, are behind the redevelopment of that 27-acre site. It will add multifamily residences, a hotel, up to 300,000 square feet of retail and about 250,000 square feet of office space.

No timetable was available for when Publix will open.""

so from the last line the store is on schedule....  Publix is a privately held corporation they do move slower than publicly traded ones.   I have no doubt this store will open and also the new store uptown someday.  The project uptown went from being office with Publix on the ground floor to new apartments above a Publix.

saw this photo on the Childress Klein website great photo of Apex Southpark  again this is great development.  Steak 48 is the highest energy steakhouse in town!  I still CK is the developer who could help First Presbyterian develop their  mostly vacant block uptown with their experience with Sharon Presby. 

345 world-class luxury apartments, a 175-room full service Hyatt Centric hotel with a rooftop bar and restaurant, and a new 35,000 SF worship center for SouthPark Church. Combined with a four-level parking garage and anchored by 90,000 SF of ground-floor retail

1. 2. 3. new brewery at back of the mall and new playground.  4. 5. 6. Capitol Towers and new Rhino Deli should open late spring according to contractors.

10. and the rest  The new Mill Creek Residential apartments behind Southpark Towers off Fairview.  

There will be a UP walking tour of Southpark area of this rapidly urbanizing area later in the year.  (and not it wont be going into the mall at all)

In other rezoning news Related wins their rezoning of the Trianon condo complex for their new mixed use project in Southpark.

""Related Group's proposed redevelopment of Trianon Condominiums in SouthPark will become a reality.

Charlotte City Council voted unanimously during its Monday evening zoning meeting to approve a petition to rezone for 9.13 acres at Roxborough, Rexford and Colony roads from multifamily to mixed-use development with five-year vested rights. The change allows the Miami-based developer to move forward with plans to replace the 50-year-old condo development with 60,000 square feet of retail, 730 multifamily units and 18 to 24 townhomes.""

The project will include two apartment buildings, as well as townhome "pods." The high rise apartment building will have 15 floors at its tallest point at Roxborough and Rexford, and transition to six floors at Colony and Roxborough. The townhomes will be built where the site is adjacent to single-family residences on Wickersham Road.

also includes money for the Southpark Loop trail  and $1 M to the Charlotte affordable housing fund.

check out this plan for behind the Southpark Towers on Fairview.  a 5 story Medical office building on the surface parking lot next to the Ruth's Chris Steakhouse and then a 17 story?? apartment tower behind it.  Page 41 of 48 of this public meeting documentation of shows 9 levels of apartments I think atop 8 levels of parking (which would be used the office buildings and apartments)  and some additional retail on the other side of the almost twin Southpark Towers.
