Carolina Place Mall

Recommended Posts

I was at Carolina Place for the first time in about 3 years this past weekend, and I must say the improvements are significant. CP desperately needed a good bookstore, and the B&N is well above average. The Harpers works well there also. I didn't even leave that side of the mall while my wife shopped, because there was plenty to do in just that one area.

So I went to CP yesterday for the first time in a while...........it seems to me as though there are a lot more cheesy off-brand women's stores......Aldo has opened up and Pacific Sunwear has expanded. American Eagle has moved to the corner where Gap Kids was and a friend of mine who works at the mall told me that Banana Republic is taking the old AE spot.

The Gap at CP is terrible and outdated. They really need to re-do it like their other stores. I am suprised there isn't a J Crew yet.

General Growth Properties, the owner of Carolina Place, filed for bankruptcy. They're $27 billion in debt--the biggest real estate bankruptcy in US history. Here's the link to the story.

They own other high-profile malls in NC as well, including Four Seasons in Greensboro and The Streets at Southpoint in Durham.

So I was shocked to see that Abercrombie & Fitch was closed. I won't miss it one bit! Is this where the H&M is supposed to go? I suppose it would go take up this space plus the space where The Gap used to be.

That sounds about right. Every other H & M I have seen has been pretty massive in relation to other large scale mall retailers. I'm not terribly surprised about A & F though. It seems like every time I have found myself in CP that store looked pretty dead. I really think that retailer's desirability has diminished significantly.

Yes Gap closed a while back. It seems like this mall's demographics keeps getting younger and younger.

I am a bit underwhelmed by the size of this store. It's smaller than the existing stores in Raleigh and Winston Salem. Meanwhile Raleigh is getting another location (also bigger), and a larger one is opening in as well in Charleston (on King Street...OK, that was predictable). In fact, I couldn't find a record of a smaller store in existence with a quick Google search (I am sure there are smaller...just doesn't seem to be the norm). Hoping they will find a nice, multi-story spot in Charlotte soon for a second store.

That being said, it's about damned time! Excited to see this store in our metro.

How is Carolina Place Mall doing these days? With the news of the Sears closing more locations (now up to 235), including one in Gastonia and Cary, I am curious to know how much time the company has left, and what will happen to the location at Carolina Place Mall. It also makes me wonder how much of an effect that would have on the mall, and what retailer would fill that space.
