Rails to Trails

For now, it would run along the old rail line that runs underneath 291 near Keith Dr., out to ICAR.  The rail line is still visible on Google Maps.

Eventually, it may connect to E. Washington St.

Thanks. Hopefully it does connect to E. Washington and links to downtown that way.

That rail line appears to run to Simpsonville. It would be great if someone could hop on a bike and ride from Simpsonville to Travelers Rest, or beyond!

Looks like this is to move the one from the current parking lot where Link apartments are going so not an additional station.

Where will the Lauren's road bridge be? Seems like, from CUICAR, we know where it will cross over Verdae, over Woodruff and over Haywood. Then under Pleasantburg but where does it go across Laurens road to connect to Cleveland Park? It doesn't seem like they would want to go through the neighborhoods across Laurens so maybe around Boyce Springs Avenue?

It would be cool when they finished they would do a leg up parallel to Haywood and followed Laurel Creek then towards the mall so all the apartments would have easy access. It would also help make that area more desirable.

They could also add in the rail spur that runs up past Innovation Drive and Carolina Point Parkway and goes on to Garlington Road. Then they could turn Woodruff Road into a pedestrian mall instead of the parking lot it is now!  :silly:

Yay on the bridges!

The Laurens Rd natural crossing of the old railway would be near Hillside Drive, but I can't visualize how to go through those streets to Cleveland Park either.   The underpass on Richland way would be handy except that it's too narrow to support a side trail.

Looks like County is on-board as well, so this will start this year.

From Gville News:

A major extension of the Swamp Rabbit Trail from Cleveland Park to the International Center for Automotive Research is moving forward.

Greenville City Council is scheduled to vote Monday on allocating $2.5 million for the project, provided Greenville County agrees to build pedestrian bridges over Laurens and Haywood roads and Verdae Boulevard.

Greenville County Administrator Joe Kernell said Friday he’s planning to include funding for the project in the county’s next budget.

“Construction should begin this year,” Kernell said.

The overall project is expected to cost $6.35 million, according to a resolution City Council is set to take up Monday.

From Cleveland Park, the trail would cross Laurens Road near the intersection with Washington Street, then run roughly parallel to Laurens all the way through ICAR.

The route would include 3.4 miles of former freight railroad controlled by the county that runs from Pleasantburg Drive to the former Hollingsworth on Wheels textile machinery plant at the Greenville/Mauldin border.

An existing railroad bridge would be used to take the route over Woodruff Road, according to the City Council resolution.

City Administrator John Castile said he’s not aware of any concerns on the part of City Council about the $2.5 million expenditure.

My thinking is that they are going to use the same route the railroad used. Thats starting at Richland going along Traxler going beside the church, dont know the name, and then crossing Laurens Rd. That's the most logical place to build another bridge. Yes I did say another bridge. There was a bridge going over Laurens back in the late 90's early 2000's. It was torn down when that section of Laurens was widened. I dont know if it had to go though. I bet they are saying what were we thinking. But who would have thought a trail would draw so much attention.
