Trail extension plans go public Tuesday

The objectives of the master plan include developing policy and land use recommendations, conceptual plans for key redevelopment opportunities along the trail and “creative strategies to encourage redevelopment of private property and connectivity with the multi-use trail extension.”

The expansion of the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail in the Golden Strip took another step forward this year with work beginning on a paved route along South Main Street in Simpsonville.

Construction of the one-mile route is ongoing, with completion expected in early 2020, said Justin Campbell, the city's community relations specialist. A section from Trade Street to Fairview Road has been repaved and crews are working on applying road marking paint that identifies the path as a trail for biking and walking, he said.

“The Swamp Rabbit extension bridges over Haywood Road, Woodruff Road and Verdae Boulevard, which the city had committed $4 million to ultimately, received a $1.5 million infusion from an economic development fund.“

Glad to see some paving improvements being done on parts of the trail. My wife broke her arm after tripping and falling on an area with roots pushing up the asphalt,  The part of the trail with rubberized track need to be redone too. It’s in terrible condition, waiting on another accident to happen.  We love our trail, but re-paving and re-rubbering is absolutely a necessity.

I believe they have determined that the rubberized construction is not durable enough for the trail traffic levels.  Those will be replaced with a solid surface when it is fixed.

Can spend ten of millions of dollars on a new park but can’t fix the current trail. Lol.

That's an interesting point @gman430; it brings up a few questions for me.

  • Do we know if the Parks department is bringing on more staff/contractors to manage the maintenance and landscaping of Unity Park once it comes on line and if so, to what level?
  • Is that a contracted service in general in which separate entities bid on the maintenance?
  • Will some of our other parks see a decrease in their maintenance routine just based on labor scheduling?

I will be interested to see the fallout of the new park and the increased demand for landscape maintenance on other smaller neighborhood parks that may become neglected. I'd support an increase the number of community work days coordinated by the City to keep the parks as nice as possible. Thoughts?

Thanks for sharing! There's some REALLY great ideas in there. This trail will definitely spur redevelopment (and already has). Implementing a lot of these strategies and guidelines needs to happen ASAP to guide positive development. Redeveloping Verdae Village would be great to see.

Is there any plan to name the trails/spurs, or color code them for orientation purposes? Is the system itself the Swamp Rabbit Trail System, and within that we have multiple trails?

I really hope we see redevelopment of the Laurens Road corridor to something akin to the renderings and development plans they envision. The amount of density that can correspondingly be created within the city limits would go a long way in capturing growth and curbing *some* sprawl in the county. This master plan at least leaves me optimistic.

^^ Where did you find this?  Is this going before a public board soon?

It is coming before the Greenville County Zoning Board in December.  A lot about to happen along the Swamp Rabbit in this area.  Another piece of property next to this over 253 is under contract as well.  Also the Poe Mill redevelopment and the mill next to it.

To the north in Simpsonville, the city recently added a nearly one mile section of the Swamp Rabbit Trail that travels along South Main Street from West Trade Street, ending at Fairview Road.
