They have enough money for 4 projects is what I heard in Janurary.

How did that happen? Did they reach their bond limit? If so, then in a few years, they can get moving again.

Edit: Forgot about the Sewer project. City can only borrow so much. Green Light will be pay as you go starting in 2012.

That means the "30 years worth of improvements" won't be done in the anticipated 10 year time frame.

That is correct Cajun, and the politicians wonder why we have a tough time passing a tax proposal. They can't even do what they promised on this simple plan. It's a great start but I'm disappointed that they are falling short with the goal.

Yeah...I'm thinking the possibility of another bond issue has just been shot to hell.

Now consider that American Reinvestment and Recovery Act paid for a good portion of the Central Thruway, and it's even more frustrating that BR has maxed out it's bond capacity. That means no new prison, ALIVE, or whatever else was in that proposal Holden wanted would have happened in a decent amount of time.

Are they going to finish Staring?

Work finished on Staring Lane Green Light project

Work has been finished on an extension of Staring Lane, the 15th Green Light project achieved in East Baton Rouge Parish. A ribbon cutting will be held Thursday morning to mark completion of the work. The $16 million project links Essen/Staring Lane with Burbank Drive; a bridge across Bayou Fountain has been built and new traffic signals have been installed on Burbank Drive and Highland Road. Work started earlier this year on a project to four-lane Staring from Highland to Perkins Road. Once that expansion is complete there will be a direct four-lane link from Interstate 10 at Essen to Burbank.

All of the driving lanes are open on Highland. They have a couple of loose ends and I believe one drive way to complete. It's a lot better now and has helped a ton with traffic in the area. If only this could have been open 5 years ago when I worked there.

Officials say road and sewer plans progressing nicely

Twenty-six Green Light Plan road projects have been let for bid through this year, which is ahead of the original schedule of 23 projects, say Michael Songy of CSRS, which is directing the plan for the city-parish. Officials gave an update on the parish's street improvement program and the ongoing sewer upgrades today at a luncheon sponsored by the Baton Rouge Growth Coalition. Seventeen Green Light projects are complete, Mayor Kip Holden says, and more than 90 local firms have worked on projects. Those projects have been paid for with two bond issues backed by a half-cent sales tax; however, the pace will slow to a little more than one new project a year now that the bond revenue has been spent and the program switches to "pay as you go." About $460 million has been spent or committed. Songy says the plan is about $91 million under budget, thanks to cheaper construction costs since 2008, using a boulevard design rather than five lanes with extended gutters, right-of-way donations, and cooperative developers who have agreed not to build in the corridors of upcoming road projects.

About 90% of projects in the city-parish's federally mandated $1.3 billion sewer improvements are either complete, designed or under construction, says Michael Ellis of CH2M HILL. The projects, funded by a half-cent sales tax and sewer user fees, are slated to be finished by 2014. All pump stations will have emergency generators, which was not required by the federal government but requested by Holden. More than 300 firms are working on projects, including 180 with offices in Baton Rouge, Ellis says.

Ha..is that even a 1/2 mile?? Looking forward to driving down that bad boy when all phases are complete...there will be plenty of bridges with the R.R. overpass; Comite River & Beaver Bayou!

Touting it as a north-south route from Nicholson to Hooper trips me out when a 1/3 of it is east-west(Coursey); like a plane ride from Dallas to Chicago but hitting Atlanta first...

^ Yeah that's what I'm saying!

In this Edition of "Suburban" Planet...this new Stumberg Ln/Pecue Road connector btwn Airline Hwy/Jefferson Hwy will be a nice new north-south route from Perkins Road to Coursey Blvd. There will be a Smart Growth round-about at the Women's Hospital access drive.

Siegen Lane improvements complete

Getting the green light: Mayor Kip Holden will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday to mark the completion of improvements to Siegen Lane, the 21st roadway project completed in the Green Light Plan. At a cost of $13.2 million, Siegen Lane has been widened from a two-lane undivided roadway to a four-lane curb and gutter roadway with a raised median and sidewalks on both sides, from Highland Road to a point just south of Perkins Road. Improvements also include a realigned intersection with new traffic signals at North Oak Hills Parkway and Briar Hollow Avenue, the installation of new sewer force main along the full length of the project limits, and a storm drainage system replacing the previous roadside ditches. The ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. at the project right-of-way area at Siegen Lane and North Oak Hills Parkway.
