Bill McBride

Whether you're a Democrat or Republican, just about every native Floridian was greatly saddened by the unexpected passing of Bill McBride just before Christmas. Bill is best remembered by those who didn't know him for his "thumping" by former governor Jeb! Bush in 2002, but long before that admittedly uninspiring campaign Bill, as managing partner for Florida uber-law firm Holland & Knight, carried on the traditions of his mentor Chesterfield Smith and New South politicians like Reubin Askew, LeRoy Collins and Bob Graham. All believed in a Florida that protected its environment and, although quite moderate in their approaches to Florida's economy, believed firmly in a Florida that embraced all its citizens, not just the wealthy few.

It's an era that has passed, sadly, as Bill's death makes all too clear. My condolences to his wife Alex Sink and his family  and friends. We can only hope that somehow we can find someone one day with with a just a shred of the integrity and caring Bill McBride showed everyday Floridians to lead us again, whatever his/her political persuasion.

A side note: though he worked in Tampa and lived in nearby Thonotosassa, Bill was originally a central Floridian, having been born in Illinois but raised in Leesburg from age 9.
