The U.S. Census reports that Guilford County has 500,879 people. This means one third of the Triad's 12 county regional population (CMSA) is in Guilford County.

However Guilford County is still a distant third in the state behind Wake County which has 952,151 people.

Other major NC counties (its interesting that Cumberland County has passed Durham County in population, Fayetteville is on the heels of Durham and Winston-Salem in terms of population.)

rank 1 Mecklenburg - 969,031

rank 2 Wake - 952,151

rank 3 Guilford - 500,879

rank 4 Forsyth - 358,137

rank 5 Cumberland - 324,049

rank 6 Durham - 279,641

Almost 3.4 million in 5 counties though out of 100, forget the rankings, its not shabby, Guilford may be 3rd best but its competition is stiff, nationally so.  I'm not jealous, our state prospering will still benefit GSO, and our state.  Peripherally perhaps a good thing for GSO, for now.

So true NC's urban areas are growing but we still have a ways to go. Atlanta's metro has more people than the Triangle, the Triad and Charlotte metro combined. North Carolina is attractive to people for a number of reasons. Its business climate, and the mild weather which is attractive to retirees.
