Hurricane Season in Florida 2005

Im not worried nor are most floridians

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I remmember THAT attitude HURRICANE ANDREW (cough) (cough)

And who are u to speak for MOST Floridians maybe Floridians in your area arnt worried but trust me there are plenty who DO care. It seems to me that people in the Tampa Bay area have been lucky for years so it makes sense about that attitude.

And while im on a rant im sick and tired of people from the Orlando area expecting sympathy for the hurricanes they endured last year, the fact remains that when these hurricanes crossed the Orlando area they were minimal Cat 1's or Cat 2's. Indeed SOUTH FLORIDIANS have been enduring close calls and hurricane threats for years(Hurricane Irene,Tropical Storm Harvey,Hurricane Andrew to name a few). HURRICANES ARE NOTHING NEW so those people i am reffering to need to stop whining you are NOT alone.

Lower Keys under hurricane warning, Middle and Upper Keys under tropical storm warning and hurricane watch, Miami-Dade under tropical storm warning, and South Florida under flash flood watch.

Forecasters have pointed out that the storm is following a path very similar to Ivan.

^ Me too, especially so early in the year! it's 5mph short of the official cat 5 designation although the local news reports have been saying that the NHC forecasters don't expect it to reach category 5 status.

Crossing over Cuba won't weaken it for long either; it will downgrade briefly to category 3 and restrengthen to category 4 and head toward the Panhandle/Alabama/Mississippi gulf coast.

By 2am Saturday it's going to be somewhere in the Straits of Florida. It's going to get nasty in Cuba.

Dennis is now a category 2. Electricity is intermittent in Key West, and it's raining pretty good on the South Florida mainland (I managed to get home from work before the downpour came) :) ... Miami-Dade, Broward, and Collier counties are under a tornado watch.

A couple models show it slightly more to the east, which would be better for pensicola... alot of folks still dont have proper roofs almost a year later. I really hate seeing the relaxed attitudes. In tallahassee, people are way to use to misses. But i did not expect so many people to think a bunch of rain is coming. I bet it will become at least a good 4 before taking the shore of the panhandle.

The Keys were spared a direct hit and South Florida was very fortunate as well. There are downed trees throughout the region, some storm surge in the Keys and minor street flooding from the rain, and some minor damage.

In the Keys (Monroe County) there are about 27,000 without power from Bahia Honda (Seven Mile Bridge) to Key West, along with 100,000+ residents in Dade, 57,000 in Broward, and 13,000 in Palm Beach counties. And in Miami-Dade County several low-lying neighborhoods were spared from severe street flooding thanks to new pumping stations installed several months earlier. I also overheard that the Tampa Bay area had some tornado touchdowns.

In Cuba there have been at least 10 fatalities.

Doesn't look like Pensacola and Alabama will be out of the clear this time. Landfall expected sometime tomorrow.

A band came over us here in tallahassee at 12 when i was headin in to work.. It was heavy heavy rain and constant thunder. And we are pretty far away. I work at the local clearchannel stations so tonight, i will be too busy to enjoy my tipical 4 am nap. lol. My friends at UWF in pensicola just got into town at 12.30 and they say most people have left. I am glad to hear this.

The best we can say is that it'll probably provide a little more rain for South Florida. Still too early to tell, but I'd definintely keep an eye on it no matter where you are. Whether it comes through South Florida or not it still has a good chance of making some noise in the gulf again.

So how does everyone think the onslaught of hurricanes will affect growth in Florida? Apparently, the 2004 hurricane season will be the norm from now on if certain meteorologists are right. Expect 3 or 4 category 3 or higher storms hitting FL each hurricane season. Do you think this will significantly decrease the number of people moving into FL? Also do you think it will cause people to start moving away in big numbers? I am thinking that you may see a trend of people starting to move inland. Also people who don't live in FL who are thinking about moving here may decide not to after seeing the extreme damage pictures all over the news. Any opinions?

Resilient is a good term...

I'm at the office right now but I've learned that I don't have power at home... we're on generator power here (yay!!). Saw a couple of transformers blow outside my window (what a sight that is). It's very windy right now and I could hear the wind howling in the elevator shaft. We were joking about how it was haunted and dared anybody to go in there. It wasn't so bad once you got in.

I think the eye is passing over us because it has stopped raining for the time being...

The eyewall is passing over us now... MAN has the wind picked up! Not as much rain on this end of the storm so far but the wind has turned it into sheets... It's funny... we are an island of electricity in a sea of pitch blackness right now. I can see lights maybe a few miles down.

There are areas experiencing flooding... although some areas that are notoriously flood-prone are not being as severely hit as in storms past. There are new pumping stations in the Sweetwater area near Florida International University that have helped that area a LOT. A lot of residents who live in flood-prone areas and lived through rain events such as these had gotten sandbags ahead of time. Biscayne Blvd in downtown Miami is under about 5-6 inches of water right now.

Right now the Kendall area is getting a huge band of wind and rain. This thing extends from as far north as Hialeah and as far south as Homestead. Just a wild eye-ball estimate off the map, it's about 40 miles east to west at its widest point, and about 25 miles north to south at its widest point. Large parts of this area are without power.

In Broward, the impact can be felt most in Pompano Beach, Deerfield Beach, Hillsboro Beach, and Fort Lauderdale. Boca Raton and vicinity in southern Palm Beach County is also within that same area.

Very strange how this thing veered southwest. The Kendall and South Dade areas are bearing the brunt of this right now... The eye is over Everglades National Park right now (it was cutting across the Dade-Broward county line either in the evening). Some South Dade residents say that this is worst storm to hit the area since Andrew.
