College Park

Scott J checks out the demand for bagels (or lack thereof) in oh-so-Ward & June-worthy College Park:

”Speaking of bagels, some people are bound and determined to make College Parkers eat bagels whether they want them or not, and so far they do not. There was a Bagel Bruno paired with a Foxtail Coffee Co. on Edgewater Drive. Didn’t take. Then Belanger Bagelsopened up the street a bit. It closed, though in College Park’s defense they were Montreal-style bagels. Now Jeff’s Bagel Run is going to make a run of it in Belanger’s space. ”

Didn’t Dr. Seuss cover this a few decades back?

College Park seems bound and determined to take the prize away from South Eola for most turnover in eateries:

“As long as we’re talking about New York, Thai Farm Kitchen, a Brooklyn restaurant that opened a second location in College Park last year, has ceased its Orlando operations. It had moved into the former RusTeak space when that restaurant relocated to Thornton Park. TFK had many fine critiques, though I would rate mine as tepid. It had been open less than a year. By all appearances, the Brooklyn location lives on.

Also in College Park, El Vic’s, which presented itself as a “global cuisine” restaurant but excelled in Indian dishes, closed its doors. Its life was relatively longer than Thai Farm Kitchen’s but still less than two years.”

From Scott J

Actually, South Eola has gotten downright stable of late @dwSouthEola has been whipping things into shape over there!

Sad to see businesses close no matter where they are in the city. Even if places were able to make it through Covid, operating costs to offer a quality product/service can still be a lot and rent hikes aren't exclusive to apts/homes, business space can also be shockingly high. I've spoken to people who have said if their lease went up by even a couple hundred dollars they'd have to close.

Just can't add the word 'district' the be accurate? Apparently if you call our neighborhood by it's actual name you bursts into flames! Lol. At this point anyone continuing to call us TP does so by choice, either willful ignorance or spite.. neither the city or the TP neighborhood supports it. Heck, RusTeak is now on South Eola Drive but what's in a name?

You’re right - I prefer South Eola but sometimes I’ll be reading stuff that mentions TP and my brain doesn’t catch up. Glad the city’s on board even if the Real Estate Industrial Complex often isn’t.

I don't understand why some of these restaurants open up in CP thinking they're going to thrive. They need to do some market research before entering...CP is not a place to try new things. That's why we have Mills nextdoor.

Family-oriented, fantastic service or some type of quick-serve geared towards kids will thrive here. Full believer that a huey magoos would do amazing here. It's frustrating to see how much $ unique restaurants will dump into their start knowing they won't survive a year.

Thank you for this. It constantly boggles my mind how sense of place is ignored on these decisions. Everybody is just operating in their own little silos anymore.

There’s a reason the Tap Room at Dubsdread would seem ridiculously old-school anywhere else but absolutely thrives in CP.

I don't know... Jade Sushi, Adriatico, Armando's, Trevi (or whatever they call themselves), Digress all seem to do quite well. A few years back, K was one of the best in town. There are a lot of no kid adults in CP that don't want to fight the 20 somethings for a seat in Mills. The problem with the two restaurants that closed is they just were not very good. I suspect if you put The Strand in CP it would be just as successful.

The next to fall will be China of College Park. Don't have a clue what happened there as it always has been a staple and my go to but food has been downright disgusting as of late. The interior seems like a hot mess and serves no one inside. Their runway is short unless something turns around there.

I'm hoping Brunos will be a big success as there is a lot of hype around it.

Hey, maybe you can get another Italian spot... add Bruno and Tornatore's to my list above and you could call CP "Little Italy".

Not a fan of the person, but his pizza is mighty good.

Yeah I'm not too excited for his concept for this spot. Honestly Tornatores makes a better pizza already.

Bungalower is calling this College Park but I was tempted to put it in the Packing District. Anyway, it’s on North OBT just past the Country Club entrance.

Anyway, how bout some ‘cue!?! We haven’t had nearly enough spots lately. St. Vic’s Smoke Shack is the name:

One of Orlando’s classic restored houses is up for sale in the Lake Adair neighborhood:

College Park author’s historic estate lists for $3.2 million

From The Sentinel

Even though it’s not small, houses from that era had a scale that, imho, work so much better than the McMansions-on-steroids that get built in places like Isleworth nowadays.

Orlando’s College Park ready to ‘evolve’ with Edgewater Drive project
https://www.orlandosentinel.com/business/os-bz-college-park-edgewater-drive-20221222-37q6gcvaxfd4hafuzfxybuzih4-story.html

From The Sentinel

Look for sidewalks to go from 5’ to 9-12’. Also, a roundabout is coming to Edgewater Dr and Lakeview.

’”The challenge for College Park is that people want to define it by its buildings, but it’s always been defined by its people,” said City Commissioner Robert Stuart, a lifelong resident who represents the community. Stuart said College Park was a model for communities such as Baldwin Park and Celebration but is now learning from the places it once inspired.

’Stuart hopes people use Edgewater Drive to enjoy College Park, and motorists looking to leave town will take Interstate 4 or Orange Blossom Trail. “We don’t want you to blow past,” Stuart said of Edgewater Drive. “We don’t want you to use it as a highway.”’
