Getting the Suburbs

2 posts in this topic

The suburbs never worked for me, seeing as how we lived on the west side of town and almost everything I wanted to do in Orlando back then was on the other side of I4. But this vision by Richard Ford in today's NY Times probably comes very close to how my parents regarded it and helps me understand them better than I ever did.

I always thought that the show, The Wonder Years, had a strange call to defense of the 'burbs. Here's a link to the pilot episode. The narrative in the first few minutes and then again in the last few made me wonder (pun unavoidable) what the cultural view of surburbia was at the time of the shows airing (1988). I'm was not even 10 years old at that time and thought the whole rise/return to cities thing was pretty recent.
