The really odd thing about that article, however, is that he positions Nashville to be an international tourist destination because it is "low cost".  That couldn't be further from the truth now. Our hotel rates (primary driver of cost in travel) are at the same level of places many times our size. Downtown Nashville literally has Manhattan level hotel rates right now.

Tennessee business growth now faster than pre-recession levels 8 years ago.  From April to June, almost 9,000 new businesses stared in the state, up 7.2% from same period last year. Of course, a great deal of this energy is located in the center of the state.

State of Tennessee sets another tourism spending record for past fiscal year with $18.4 billion (a 3.7% increase over last year's record).  Davidson County led the way with $5.7 billion of that total.

Joining the ranks of KFC's "Nashville Hot Chicken," now Buffalo Wild Wings offers...

I got to try this last weekend. It is good, but it didn't even remind me of Nashville Hot Chicken. It tasted more like a variation of sweet barbecue. I don't understand why they even call it that ($$$$$$$ - hahaha)

JP Morgan Chase looking to expand its presence in Nashville.  CEO Jamie Dimon and Commercial Banking CEO Doug Petno were in town Thursday, and did a long interview with NBJ.  They are very bullish on Nashville. Here are some quotes:

"We look at Nashville as being one of the most attractive opportunities for us where we can have a nice 100-year opportunity to invest and build our bankers. You can look around and see the cranes, the convention center, the types of businesses moving here. Health care is a big specialty for JPMorgan Chase."

"I think it’s a diverse, growing, vibrant place. I think it’s got a business climate. At least the opinion of the folks we had lunch with is that they like the governor, they like the mayor here. That’s always important, so I think that’s in the city’s favor."

"You have a good diverse economy, and you had a good sample of that today at this lunch. The attendees were a slice of what you have here in Nashville — banking, service, logistics, heavy equipment, music companies. That’s why we like it here because it’s diverse and growing with a pretty interesting talent pool with a lot of capital formation. In addition to longstanding Tennessee companies, there are some pretty interesting new businesses here."

"A lot of it’s not by accident. We get to travel around the United States, and see the have’s and the have not’s in these markets. This is a sort of exceptional place in that regard. The amount of growth here, the vibrancy. There are plenty of other places where the tax climate is terrible, the fiscal outlook is terrible. If you own a small business it takes you a year because you’re stuck at City Hall, and we didn’t hear a lot of that today."

-Petno

"All the things that Nashville is doing well are things that we’re not doing well at on the national level, so if we could apply those on the national level, then our country would be doing far better."

-Dimon
