More Accolades for Nashville

Nashville has a good chance of landing the NASCAR Awards Show. Has been in Las Vegas for 9 years, and now that they have added a second race there, NASCAR officials think they have enough coverage in that market already.  Charlotte already hosts several other large NASCAR events.  The Awards Show/Banquet is broadcast on a national network. Would pump millions more into local economy for a weekend in November.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman thinks time is getting closer for Nashville to be considered for an outdoor game.  Probably Stadium Series (which tend to happen in February or early March) because of the conflict of Music City Bowl at Nissan Stadium (68,000 seats) around New Years Day (which is also when the NHL Winter Classic is held).  Another option might be Dudley Field at Vanderbilt (42,000 capacity).  All NHL outdoor games are already secured for the 2019, so earliest would be 2020.

I don't follow hockey at all, but is it common for the President's Cup winner to also win the Stanley Cup? I am assuming it rarely happens, so in my mind this is a bad thing haha.

**Edit** Ok I decided to investigate some.  The Predators are the 32nd team to win the President's Cup. Of the previous 31 teams, 8 have gone on to win the Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks being the last team to do so in 2013.

Some numbers:

  • Stanley Cup Winners: 8
  • Lost Stanley Cup Final: 4
  • Lost Conference Finals: 5
  • Lost Second Round: 7
  • Lost First Round: 6

^ ^ ^  The award was first handed out in 1985-86 therefore there have been 31 winners. Of those 31, 11 went to the Final and eight won the Stanley Cup. Quick math says that if you earn the regular-season honor, you have a 35 percent chance to make it to the Final and a 26 percent chance of hoisting the chalice. Considering the fact that 16 teams get into the playoffs every year, those are actually pretty favorable odds.

Prior to 1985-86, it would’ve been ludicrous to suggest a jinx. Why? Of the 18 regular season champions between 1968 and 1985 (the NHL’s “Expansion Era” prior to the Presidents’ Trophy being awarded), 14 of them played into late May/early June and 11 of them won the whole thing.

It just gives the team more home games, which tends to bode well for that team. The overall statistics of presidents trophy winning teams (with still an impressive amount of cup winners) ignores the particulars of each of the teams that have won the trophy. For instance, everyone and their mother knew that 3 time trophy winning Washington wasn’t going to win the cup, they’re not built for the playoffs.
