More Accolades for Nashville

Actually surprised Denver is on the list. I've never thought of it as a "road" trip destination.  It's just not close to many large cities.  Vegas has LA and Phoenix, among other decent size cities within a half-day drive, but what's near Denver?  Maybe KC? OKC? SLC? Hmmmmm, maybe I don't understand the concept of a road trip.

Five hour drive radius

I would say that is a 70 mph drive because I can be in Atlanta in a little over 4 and this is past there, but I drive a little over the limit. A little under 5 for me to St Louis and Indy as well going the speed limit as I have driven them a number of times so they seem to be about right. Four and a half will get me to Kingsport if I go there and go into town but if I drove on up into VA, it would take about 5. I just found a website and plugged the numbers in and these were pretty close.

AAA has listed Nashville as the #5 "Road Trip" destination for Memorial Day Weekend as far as bookings are concerned:

  1. Las Vegas
  2. Orlando
  3. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
  4. Denver
  5. Nashville

    More at NBJ here:

Denver makes a great vacation destination, but I'm not so sure it makes a great road trip destination given the fact that it takes a minimum of seven weeks to drive there from anywhere.

EDIT: I see now that @MLBrumby already covered this oddity.  :D

I'm with @Skyscrapergeek on this one.

I'm driving down from CBus tomorrow and... I'll be there in 5 hours.

Come on Daniel.....Its a good 6 and half to CBus!

Okay, maybe some hyperbole. On my trip back last night I did so in 5:21 with a starting point near Briley on the east side of town. It helps that I didn't have to take 275 to 471 in Cincy.

Maybe a stretch to call this a full-on accolade: (spoiler alert) Nashville comes in at #36 out of 50 top U.S. cities as a beer/ brewery city. Memphis made it, as well. From the NBJ

Not trying to be snarky, but how many cities tout their 'craft brewery SCENE'?   Aside from Portland and Denver and maybe Cincy and Boston, does any of the rest really stand out?  IDK because it's not really my thing.

San Diego is big time and it is well touted.

Milwaukee. Only because I assume if they name their baseball team the Brewers, that has to mean good brewery scene.

That's certainly due to its heritage of the big breweries that used to call the city home.   Many were bought up or went out of business.  PBR and Miller are still around.  But does that mean a lot of craft breweries with very good beer have popped up over recent decades?  I should be more familiar with Milwaukee but I'm not. Can the same be said for St. Louis?  IDK!  Maybe that's the point... is having a craft brew scene really a big deal?  How significant of a drawing card is it?   I love hitting the Hofbrau House in CVG Kentucky across the river from Cincy, but I'm just as happy drinking a cold can of Coors or Michelob as I'd be with a tulip, stein, pilsner, yard etc. of the house specialty.  I admit to liking a cold mug of Guinness once in a while. Gotta be frosted!

Yeah to your point, Milwaukee is where several of the big national breweries came from way before the craft beer scene. No idea what they've created since then.

I'd also add that Asheville is as good as it gets. Amazing craft breweries and then places like New Belgium and Oskar Blues who got big have their East Coast operations there.

I question the validity of that craft brewery list given the fact that Grand Rapids is nowhere to be found on it.  Grand Rapids is truly a mecca for a beer enthusiast such as myself.  It has eighty plus breweries, likely one of the highest per capita densities anywhere on earth.  Craft Beer culture is very much a thing here in The Great Lakes region, especially in western Michigan.  It seems like every sizable town has at least one or two microbreweries it proudly touts.

There's still a lot of beer being made in Milwaukee…though the huge corporations have consolidated so much.   Maybe Miller is still there?  Molson Coors?  I think Leinenkugel is there.  And I also read somewhere that they started doing microbrewery beer in Milwaukee in the mid 80’s?  Not sure how their microbreweries stack up to other cities…but I know Milwaukee still likes to tout itself as the Brew City.

Remember the list are always subjective! The beer list was done by Real Estate Witch, which is a publication I have never heard of. That is why I pay no attention to these list any more. PURE FLUFF!

Yeah and that list was done by metrics like number of breweries and distinct types of breweries. Not the most important subjective factor: quality of breweries.
