I know it's a totally different use with a larger footprint (in Detroit), but it kind of feels like U of M saw the MSU building, said "hold my beer", and then came out with this:

Looks like a great development for Detroit, and makes me a bit envious that we build very boring buildings. ;)

Agreed. But there's something between our boring boxes and that Gumby building that would be more desirable. Either way, I'd definitely love to see some more creativity in GR.

Add that on to the projects that Gilbert won't be doing? :P

When I look at them side by side, I kind of get this "settle down, little brother" feeling (that's what U of M calls MSU, right?). :) Like,
yeah, what you are doing is "cute", but...":

I'm still really excited about MSU's commitment to Grand Rapids, and to hear what companies they've landed to move into the building / area. I would have loved to see something a little less, well, "clinical".

Anyone know anything about this BAMF Health that will be part of this project? Their website is a bit lacking in .... basically anything that you need for a company website.

Looks like it’s a startup founded by one of the lead researchers at VAI:

Ah, I only took the first google hit I got. Should have dug deeper.

I don't know if anyone posted this yet, but Spectrum will also be part of this project. Should've gone taller.

They were digging out the grass on the Monroe side of the MSU property. Seems like kind of an odd spot to start with, since it’s the only part that doesn’t have a development ready to go.

Joe

Looks to be just the construction trailers Joe.

Taller....story of GRand Rapids’ life. I think there’s been exactly 3 projects that surprised/exceeded my height expectations....river house, Bond and the castle...

Spectrum's gonna try to cram 1200 people in that dinky ass building???

Or is this separate from their "new DT building"?

They are locating learning space for their residency program in that building.   It is not the same as the North Monroe "Center for Innovation" plans.

Arena Place. Was supposed to be like 5 stories before new plans were suddenly released to make it 11.

You gotta wonder why they didn't plan for future expansion by building up. Under utilized floors for a few years beats crammed floors in a few years. Feels like another swing and a miss.

They're digging quite a hole for this project, and bracing it with a massive number of wood slats for a retaining wall on the Michigan Street side.  Reminds me of the Michigan Street projects up the hill when they were building them (not quite as massive).

You can really see it when you take the Ottawa exit heading East on I-196.

I'm amazed how many recent projects don't have any kind of basement.   Mostly residential I guess.
