According to the photo captions in the linked article, the top was indeed copper.

 

I have to imagine the top was copper and definitely worth salvaging.

I think it's going to be used as an artistic element in the new building. And it's doubly cool cause it's already green. :)

So... no iconic images of someone chaining themselves to the demolition equipment in an effort to prevent the destruction of this  building?

Now that the demo has moved to the South wall of the building, the webcam is more interesting:

In some ways this reminds me of when they demolished the Chicago Sun Times building to make way for the Trump Tower. We happened to be in Chicago when it was going down. That building was ugly too!
