He's a really really safe choice.  I generally like Dan, but I don't like that he didn't support Charlotte's bid to be allowed in increase its local transit tax when the state was passing legislation several years back.  I forgot what he wanted in return, but it had something to do with re-prioritizing projects I believe.

^^^IIRC he wanted to have some sort of commitment from CATS/MTC that the southeast corridor would have Light Rail, not BRT, as the LPA.

I hope he gets the nod. He is incredibly intelligent and highly qualified. He graduated from Davidson as a Rhodes Scholar, attended Oxford, and then went to Yale for Law School. He has spent approximately 20 years in some sort of government position. He may be the most highly qualified Mayoral Candidate our city has ever seen.

I believe (but am not certain) that he also had a state law passed which prevented the use of articulated buses in Mecklenburg County in order to ensure LRT on Independence. While I understood his position, that strategy struck me as kinda shortsighted.

yup, I have ridden and wondered about the articulated buses in Chapel Hill.

I am not a legislation nerd but did a quick google search and came up with this report from the City of Charlotte on legislative activity for week 14 2013.

http://charmeck.org/city/charlotte/citymanager/CommunicationstoCouncil/Memo%20attachments/2013%20week%2014%20report.pdf

Public Transportation Buses (SB 301 –Graham/HB 375 –Jeter)
SB 301 is a statewide bill increasing maximum allowable length of public transportation buses from 45 to 60 feet, thus allowing use of higher capacity articulated buses; SB 301 referred to Senate Transportation; HB375 is a local bill allowing buses owned and operated by the City of Charlotte to be up to 60 feet but be operated primarily on roadways with speed limits over 45 miles per hour; HB 375 passed House and referred to Senate Transportation

I don't know if it passed the Senate, but it does make it sound like only standard sized buses are Kosher in NC. I suspect that Chapel Hill got some type of exemption (a local bill like HB375 mentioned above).

Cannon: 'I regret having hurt the city that I love'

LOL I love politicians, they're all such crooks.....you certainly didn't have regrets when you were taking thousands of dollars. Why can't he just say, "I mean, yeah, I like money, like everyone. Was I shady? You bet your ass I was, who isn't? Did I take bribe money? You bet I did, the only regret I have is being dumb enough to get caught".....Becasue that's the truth, why does he need to BS and "save face" not like hes gonna be in politics anymore.

Even when they're caught and facing serious jail time, they still lie.

So i guess 3.5 years in prison is all you get for accepting bribes these days. What a joke.

"“It’s clear you’re a good man but you made serious mistakes,” said Whitney, a former federal prosecutor. “This court must send a message that public corruption is unacceptable and will be severely punished.”

HAHAHAH 3.5 years dude.....when has 3.5 years ever been severe?

When I was in the service, I was in the post exchange in Maxwell AFB, Alabama.  I was speaking to the guy stocking shelves. He seemed like a nice, pleasant guy. As the conversation progressed, I asked him where he lived.  He told me that he was a trustee at the minimum security prison on the base. I drove by the facility and it looked like a great place to live to me.  I a sure that Cannon will go to some place similar and have all the amenities  imaginable along with sexual liaisons with his girlfriend or boyfriend, whatever he likes. If does happen to end up as someone's xxxxx (lady), it will likely be of his own choice.

I have a friend who went to prison on federal white collar crime issues. I visited him at Butner NC minimum security location. No walls, just one fence. He said he learned that those who went to Seymour Johnson AFB and other "country club" prisons where they can interact with non prisoners while raking leaves, stocking shelves, etc., inmates must undergo close (just imagine) inspections to prevent contraband entry to cells. He chose to stay at Butner. He was offered everything in prison but sex with a woman and if he had been able to bargain for that he is sure he would have found a seller. Pornography, liquor, any and all drugs, male sex, money, anything. He also learned that such violations meant going "upstairs" to Atlanta or high security federal locations where the time and the searches were much less pleasant. He accepted food only in return for which he provided...he did not tell me.

He said it was amazing to see the many, many poor street level drug criminals who had little to no urge control, no experience of mediation or compromise but quickly learned to handle impulses in a way that avoided physical contact. Yelling, yes. Bad language, yes. Contact, no.

Any interest in turning this into a mayoral election thread?  Or is there already one?  Anyway, Charlotte Agenda has a quick-hitter (as is their style) on candidate Peacock.  Seems like not a complete nutjob, which is nice and surprising.  Confusingly to me, though, he is "into transit", doesn't want Charlotte to become Atlanta, yet is (apparently very) against streetcar.  Not that I'd ever vote Republican on anything, but I'd take some UP guidance from people who know the issues more better than me.

Yea, this sort of attitude frustrates me too. Surely if you consider yourself to be "pro-transit" you understand that it is important to have high capacity routes into each quadrant of the city. While the Gold Line certainly has flaws (e.g. mixed traffic running) it is the only viable proposal we have for a route to the east. Whenever I hear a "pro transit" person say that they are anti-streetcar I expect to hear what their alternative proposal for high capacity transit to the east is -- in the absence of that I gotta just dismiss them as an ideologue.

FWIW: I think the possible long-term alternatives to a mixed-traffic streetcar are 1) close Trade / Elizabeth to traffic for 19 hours per day and give the streetcar full signal preemption or 2) build a Trade / Elizabeth subway (I am not joking)
