Essex County Courthouse in Newark:

I drove past Newark's courthouse a few years ago and thought it was beautiful, but now seeing these pictures of the inside, it's beyond gorgeous!

That's the old county courthouse for Wayne County, Michigan (Detroit). It's now used mostly for some county offices including the offices for the county executive along with other businesses.

The 'new' county courthouse is part of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Building (i.e. City/County Building). It's the tower part of the complex:

The top has recently been restored to its original copper glory. Unfortuantely this is a bad picture.

I work with the guy who designed the new Clinton County Courthouse. We still have a model of it in our firm's office, tossed in the basement in some corner beneath some old floorplans.

It's a pretty good design, but they did a pretty poor job with the cupola. I hear that it was supposed to originally be open to the public, but they ultimately decided against it, and you see what they got for it.

Current Leon County Courthouse (Tallahassee, FL):

Our neighboring county's courthouse, Jefferson County, FL which is much much smaller in population than Leon County, but I like theirs much better.

(This was built in the 60's and it shows. The old courthouse burned down and I imagine from courthouses in this area and from surrounding buildings it would have to have been much more traditional)

I find this thread very interesting! It's funny what you can gather about a community by looking at their public buildings. These pictures are of

LEE COUNTY, ALABAMA

(the building is in Opelika, AL, but Lee County is also home to Auburn University, which is in the city of Auburn. The courthouse is extremely small and inefficient for a county of 120,000.)
