Wasn't an ordinance passed recently dictating that all new construction had to leave the sidewalk open, or otherwise provide means for unimpeded pedestrian travel on city streets surrounding the site? I'm confused why the tri-brand hotel on KVB is the only site anywhere in the city I've seen actually follow through on this requirement.

Not sure it was an ordinance, but it's a change in codes department policy, pushed by the mayor.    But, I'm with you that it seems exceptions continue to be granted indiscriminately, or there is no enforcement against violators.

How do you tear this down without closing the sidewalk?

Have covered sidewalks, I would think. If there is going to be an accident of debris falling into the sidewalk/road. Closing the sidewalk isn't going to help. It's not like they are just pushing the buildings over onto the sidewalks or imploding them. They are tearing them down floor by floor.

Look at the JW Marriot, the sidewalk and a whole extra lane are just being used for storage last time I drove by.

There needs to a healthy dose of common sense on both sides of the debate.  We don't need to close a sidewalk for the entirety of construction for 90% of projects, but we also have to understand that sidewalks will need to be closed for almost every project at least some of the time.

Agreed Hey_Hey, hopefully it's just for demolish and not for the entirety of the project, which we've seen all too much of lately.
