People who live in Glass houses should not throw stones.

There is much childish hometown boisterism on this site,

It's very easy for someone from Minneapolis, to chastise people from Atlanta, and Charlotte,  But  I don't think it's fair for them not to include there own city.  I don't think i'd be the only person who'd say that people from Minneapolis can also be pitbull-like when it comes to getting their city the respect, they feel it deserves.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I think I'm the only one representing Minneapolis. Therefore, it's not easy for me to chastise people from Charlotte, especially when the admin. and half the people in this forum are from there.

Wow.  I think it's obvious that those who are voting for Charlotte and Atlanat have never step foot outside their area.

St. Louis

Philadelphia

Seattle

Los Angeles

Also,

Minneapolis

Cleveland

Boston

Have you ever heard of these cities before?  They're not dead.

The childish hometown boosterism on this site is insane.

I think you misread the subject of the thread. I'd like to know someone who couldn't pick out Seattle, St. Louis, LA or Boston. All are famous, and in fact, I think all of the above are already famous, Cleveland would probably be the least famous followed by Minneapolis, but personally I think they're good to go on being famous. The thread is regarding the NEXT famous skyline, not reinitiating the already famous.

I didn't misread anything. The following cities were given to us to choose from, but already have famous skylines:

Los Angeles

Seattle

St. Louis

Philadelphia

Boston

The following are very recognizable:

Miami

Houston

Atlanta

As I stated before, Charlotte will have a chance when people start figuring out where the city is located. Its famous in this forum, but that's about it.

I'm not sure why cities that obviously already have famous skylines were listed as it contradicts the question that was asked. I'm not really certain about your group of friends or the people that you meet, but Charlotte is known just as much as other cities of it's size. Especially in places like Chicago and New York. When I lived in Chicago and someone would ask where I was from, I just had to say Charlotte. I never once was questioned, "Where is that?" Make no mistake, Charlotte isn't some little smallville in the middle of nowhere. We're no LA or New York but I think the vast majority of anyone with any geography knowledge can figure out where Charlotte is.

My group of friends

Charlotte is not as recognizable as you think. Look in any major newspaper and you will see Charlotte, NC. Why? It probably has to do with the fact that people still get confused as to whether the city is in NC or SC. Or it has to do with the fact that the city just isn't recognizable to many people outside of the S.E.

BTW, I never said Charlotte is some smallville in the middle of nowhere. It's a nice area with solid growth, a great economy and a very nice skyline. I hope to visit again sometime soon being the last time I was there, the Hearst was under construction.

I agree with North Star,

I don't think Charlotte has hit that kind of National Regcognition yet. It's getting there, I'm sure it's a great place, but lets keep things within perspective. It's a city of regional clout. It doesn't have the famously loud history of Philly. Or the instant recognition of Detroit. I think it still hides in the shadows of Atlanta. But because of this site i'm sure learning alot more about it.

I hate to add to this waste of time and continuation of staying off the subject but NorthStar is right.

Some people dont know if Charlotte is in NC or SC ( i know its in NC ). The Carolinas should become one state so we dont have to worry about it. It is indeed nice to know that everyone in Chicago knows where Atlanta is. BUT we all know where Atlanta is, just look on the back of your coke can. That thing about merging the Carolinas is not open for discussion. At least not here.

The reason most major newspapers know to do that. Is because they know that

there are more than one city with the same name. Greenville, Kansas City, Pittsburgh before they took the h off, and Miami just to name a few. And just because you are confused. Don't mean everybody is.

Well, I would likea to bring this into eveyrone's attention. This Just happens to be the "URBAN DISUSSION" forum, And its the "WHAT IS THE NEXT FAMOUS US SKYLINE" thread. NOT the "CHARLOTTE" forum, and the " I WORK AT WACHOVIA etc. etc." thread.

Was that really worth your time?

You're kidding right. It was worth every key stroke. My resons for being so detailed is to explain the signifigance behind CLT with many posters on this thread stating that Charlotte is not a well-known city. I am using my background and career as a platform to validate the words I type. I used to live in Atlanta ,and yes, I worked in Finance there as well. I can tell you now that even the "execs" who run the show in ATL's financial world have to feel shadowed to there sister city up I-85 when it comes to National and Global finance. I do not want to detour from the threads true purpose, but have to answer to people who question the notability of one of this country's leading financial and trade centers of the world. (and yes I did say world). And btw, I never mentioned I work at Wachovia. I just simply stated I just got back from the Bond Floor. So this statement is a bit off.

" I WORK AT WACHOVIA etc. etc." thread.

Now back to topic....

The next famous US skyline. (and the winner is...............)

Boise, Idaho

(I love potatoes)

LOL! Are you serious? There are a number of cities with the name Minneapolis. If there is a story in one of the major newspapers about Minneapolis, MN, they rarely put Minneapolis, Minn. Papers will put Minneapolis, Kan. just to distinguish that it's not Minneapolis; the one that's recognized by most.

BTW, who said I was confused?

I totally disagree. Maybe Charlotte is not recognized from some potato farmer in Idaho. But the educated people and 99% of the of evolved minds of the world know exactly where the Queen City is.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I highly doubt it.

It is the second  leading financial center in America outside of NY.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

It's second to NYC in banking assets, not the financial sector. Where do you come up this stuff?

Charlotte's economy pumps out more capital annually than the entire GDP of Venezuela. We are talkin' MONEY people and people know MONEY.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

As of 2003, Charlotte ranked 31st in GMP. That's nothing to brag about.

I know this might be a shocker, but I work at a bank (no real surprise, right???) here in CLT and speak to people all across the country because of my role.  I literally just got back from the bond floor in One Wachovia where they have one of the largest fixed income desks in the US. People come here from all over the world to be traders in foreign currencies, equities, and bonds. Outside of not having the exchange like Chicago (Mercantile exchange) and NYC (NYSE), Charlotte is a powerhouse for global finance and trade

blah blah blah

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

So, it's safe to say that people outside the banking and finance industry, probably don't know much about Charlotte.

You're kidding right.  It was worth every key stroke. My resons for being so detailed is to explain the signifigance behind CLT with many posters on this thread stating that Charlotte is not a well-known city.  I am using my background and career as a platform to validate the words I type.

You proved that Charlotte plays an important role in the banking world. Do you really think people outside the industry care?

WHAT PART OF "THIS IS NOT THE CHARLOTTE...." THREAD DONT YOU PEOPLE UNDERSTAND????????????? Please take your argument somewhere else!! Skylines, ( VISUALLY) in some sense have nothing to do with bank assets, and financial sectors, or whatever. This confrentation is very stupid ( though very entertaining).

Damn this topic is gettin heated....everyone thinks their city is the best, so this should be expected. I personally dont think Charlotte is the next famous US skyline. I've never heard much about it at all, like the nickname Queen city. All i know about Charlotte is that they used to have a basketball team named the Hornets. It's not well known enough now, but who knows, maybe in the future it will be. I'd say the next famous skyline will be Las Vegas. They're gonna build somethin out there interesting finally and people will recognize it.

I thinck the next big skyline player will be Atlanta. It already has a lot of reconigtion threw out the world and not to mention, there are alot of famous skysrapers/landmarks. As for Charlotte, it's making a big identy for itself but I thinck it might be another 10 years or so before it's fame gets up to some other US cities.

BTW..you guys should know by now, that no matter what u do, a post somehow relating to charlotte will end up in about every thread. Idk why, but in every thread about a different region or something, somebody mentions Charlotte. It's like the most famous city on Urbanplanet right now. Well that's my $.02.. now back to main topic.

Ughh! I just wish this babble over "whose-city-is-the-best" would just stop. As far as the whole Charlotte issue is concerned, I think it's blown out of proportion. I'm from Charlotte and I'm realistic about the city's pro's & con's. Yes, we are a pretty well-known city...but no, we haven't quite arrived to that place of..hmmm....worldwide recognition, i guess.

But back to the important subject, not to be rude....but I've never seen a true SKYLINE from Las Vegas. Everytime I see something about Las Vegas, I see casinos & towering hotels. I hope they don't make up the actual skyline.

In my opinion, the next famous US skylines (this means skylines that are NOT already famous) will be Atlanta, Minneapolis, & Charlotte (in a few short years). Although it is unnecessarily spreadout, Atlanta's skyline is quite impressive and suprisingly dense (the drive through downtown on Interstate 85 is amazing) and the Buckhead & Sandy Springs skylines are also quite charming. Minneapolis' skyline is very beautiful......well proportioned, not-overdone, but still manages to represent the scope of the city. Charlotte's skyline is also quite impressive while driving on I-277 (around downtown), the views are stunning. But its still a work in progress....although it has come an EXTREMELY long way since 1990, a lil' farther wouldn't hurt the city. With all the new towers being under construction, the Charlotte skyline will be a top contender in about 3-5 years.`

Well, when people think Charlotte has the next famous skyline, doesn't that make it the topic of discussion? I didn't bring up bank assets and global finance, or whatever. I simply pointed out why I didn't think Charlotte won't have the next famous skyline. In return, people representing the place got all defensive and tried to explain its importance.

If you insist on throwing so-called facts at us, at least you could do is provide us with a credible source other than your local chamber of commerce.

Let's just move on because I personally don't have anything against Charlotte and I don't care to start some stupid p*ssing contest. And for the record, I don't think Las Vegas will have the next famous skyline.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Well hotels and casinos are still buildings, so they can make up a skyline. I'm not saying that I like the Las Vegas skyline, I just think that eventually it will become more and more famous. It already has recongnizable buildings, like the New York, NY hotel with the rollercoaster. As much as its a massive suburban strip-like place, it still could become recongnizable.

And people, the point of these forums is to generate discussion, so everyone needs to stop getting so pissed off when somebody "insults" their city. Get over it, we're voicing opinions and some facts, all which can generate meaningful discussion.
