The Orange County Commission has never been known for great leaders, especially during the days before 1990 when it began the transition (still incomplete) to a strong-mayor system more like Orlando's. However, one of the most notable exceptions was Lou Treadway. He passed away this week, and although he was a Republican, his was one of the most progressive voices in the region. Long before just about anyone else, he was beating the drum for light rail.

I had great respect for Lou, both during his time in office and later as one of those monitoring OC activities on County Watch. Condolences to his wife Dorothy, as well as his children and his many friends in both parties. No politician I've ever known was more tireless in his efforts to improve his hometown.
