The Firebird has gotten face time in nearly every major televised (aka sporting) event in Charlotte.  I feel like it will grow to be an icon of sorts; but not on a national scale.  It makes for a great photo-op for somebody with a mid-90's Pontiac though.  The statue at the airport used to get more face time, but was never really that pleasant to look at, so I'm okay with it being dropped off the radar.

L.A. does have a recognizable skyline if only for it being used as the go-to skyline (aside from NYC) in almost every "big-city-under-attack" movie ever.  People might not be able to tell you what city it is, but I think you'd be surprised how many people would be familiar with it.

Seattle, Vegas, Chicago, NYC, San Fran, St Louis, Philly, Pittsburgh, San Antonio, Orlando, Atlanta all have icons that people can relate to which aren't necessarily their skylines.  Wrigley Field, the Epcot Globe/Disney Castle, Times Square, the Wall Street Bull, Liberty Bell, and the Alamo all come to mind.  A lot of these landmarks have history in films which is really what makes them iconic to the cities they are in.  Mount Rushmore and the Hoover Dam are iconic, but don't have a metropolis to call home.  Hell, casinos in Vegas that highlight other cities' icons is still iconic of Vegas.

Jacksonville and Tampa have possibly the most under-rated iconic bridges ever.  They have some truly gorgeous bridges at night, but really never get any face time with them.  Then again, as is the case for Charlotte, not many things get filmed there that highlight the city itself (aka Full House, CSI-wherever style.)

Charlotte needs real media attention to garner some sort of American icon.  Otherwise, expect nothing more than commuters that recognize the skyline (this is aside from people like us that read threads like these.)
