They've expanded to basically the whole state.  I'm glad they have.  I'm sure they saw an opening to provide decent journalism with the severe deterioration of the newspapers that have been bought up by national corporations (i.e. H-J and G-News).

May not be the worst thing if they continue to do a good job. P&C is unquestionably the best newspaper in SC.

The P&C reports that the City Police HQ should begin construction in June or July.  The 40,000 SF two-story building at the NW corner of N Forest and W Saint John should take ~18 months to complete.

It's also mentioned that a location for the City/County Admin building will be discussed (decided?) later this year, with the current City Hall site as a possibility (IMO, the best site).

Courthouse progress: steel framed on first 2 floors and basement on the north end, plus beams extending vertically to the top of the 4th floor.  Still 2 floors to go vertically, and it already appears taller than QS/1 and the courthouse parking deck.

Also, material mock-ups are now on display in front of the current courthouse.  The cladding is definitely very white.  I wouldn't have minded a light grey for the "rough" material to clad the basement.

On another note, I really hope the marble on the current courthouse is salvaged and reused (perhaps on the new City/County admin building).  I'd hate to see such a high-quality material to go to waste.

A few pics of the courthouse from last weekend. First time in Spartanburg for me, pretty impressed with the amount of development going on.  Looked like more stuff under construction than in some of the larger cities here in NC like Greensboro and Winston-Salem.

Spartanburg is growing like a weed! When We moved here almost 6 years ago it was still pretty sleepy, but these last few years, we've just exploded. Great stuff.

Larger mobile crane is on-site as of last week, and steel assembly has ramped back up.  Topping off is supposed to be in April (not sure if all framing will be done by then or if it will just top-off the current segment).  Concrete floor pours and fire-proofing to come shortly, as well.

Also, steel framing is complete on the EOC.  And City police HQ should start construction in August.

The County posted some photos on Facebook from the roof of the Courthouse.  Light-gauge steel is going up for the sloped/hipped roof.

Also, nice sunset from the webcam this evening!

The roof framing was done today.  When I drove by at 7:00am none of this was done.

  • Spartan changed the title to New County Courthouse

If you're ever driving on I-26 between Hwy-29 and Bus-85, be sure to look over at Tindall, because they have LOTS of white precast façade pieces for the Courthouse already complete and sitting there waiting to be installed.  Here's a poor-quality pic:

Four floors of steel framing are almost complete on the center section of the Courthouse:

They've also been backfilling the area in front of the retaining wall with fine gravel, so it's now nearly flush with the rest of the ground level.

There are now three cranes up at the courthouse site.  The 2 closer to St John are for steel assembly, while the yellow one on Library Street will begin installing the precast façade as soon as Wednesday! (according to a County Council update tonight)  You can also see that they're starting to build interior walls and staircases.
